I'll start out by saying that I don't know much about CRK knives. My brother gave me this knife several years ago. He says he bought it off a guy in the late 1980's. It is just a little over 8" in overall length. As you can see it is stamped with the number "49" Under the CR logo stamp. It is also stamped "made in the USA" on the other side of the knife. The sheath is made by El Paso Saddlery

Could you guys tell me what model this knife is and what the "49" means? Is that the serial number? Is this an early knife? How do tell how old it is?

Thanks in advance for you help:D

The knife you have there is a Chris Reeve One Piece Knife. Its a Sable III with a 4" blade. The Square Butt Cap versions were made in South Africa 1989 and prior. The #49 is the serial number which is pretty low. ALL of the One Piece Knives were discontinued in 2009. The Sable III was made from 1986 - 2006, with yours being made in 1986 most likely. Check out my CRK Timeline In the Stickey, its filled with production info. Great Knife you have there, hang onto it, its quite collectible, plus since its from your brother, the sentimental value has no price tag on it........Enjoy !

Thanks for the info.:D

One thing I am not clear on, Mine is stamped made in USA so it wouldn't be made in South Africa.... and mine is a hexagon cap not square soo.....

Were they being made in south africa and the USA at the same time?

Thanks!

Looking at the sticky with the time lines and such it indicated that the Reeve family came the USA in 1989 so thatwould mean my knife was made in 1989 or later???? So mine might not be from 1986 since it would have to be made in South Africa?

Most likely your knife is the 49th knife they made in the USA.

When I said square cap, I meant hex cap and not the round one, sorry for the mixup. When CRK first moved to the US, they had some hex caps left from their move. So there was some very early made in USA with a hex cap. All the South Africans were numbered that I have or have seen. They also numbered them for a time in the USA. So if yours is marked Made In USA, I would guesstimate it was made in 1989 or shortly there after. Unless you have the BD card, you will never know the exact date made, but we can get it pretty close. Either way, its still highly collectible and valuable anyways. ALL the One Piece Knives are nice, so you cant go wrong with any of them. Though some are suited for certain tasks than others!

Yead I don't have a BD card or box or anything just the knife & sheath. So it might be the 49th Sable III made in the USA? Do you think that might be what the 49 means?

I live in the Boise area so I think I will swing by the CRK shop and show it to them. Maybe they can provide me with some backgroungd info and/or documentation.

So what is something like this worth? Should I get it insured?

If its marked #49 Made in USA, then it was definately the 49th Sable III made in the USA. It was one of the ones that was Made in the USA with the hex butt cap, which makes it unique as well. As for a price, I would say its worth about $300.00, especially since the whole One Piece Knives are discontinued. You dont see a ton of the Sable III's around, especially one with a serial #. I have a Sable IV and I really like it. I used it to clean and skin a deer with it the year before last year. Last year, I used the CRK Skinner to clean and skin 3 whitetail deer before it needed sharpening. They are awsome knives for sure. I know I would definately hang onto it. The price is only going to go up !!!

Nyfemaker. Thank you so much for all your help! I will keep I cherish the knife that is for sure! I have never used this knife & it looks to me like no one else has either. It sounds like I should just keep it and fondle it now and again and not use it. I imagine like anything else condition plays a huge part in the value of a knife.

don't feel like you can't use it, crk will make it look like new at anytime... i only find value in something that I use

So they will refurbush them eh? That's good to know. Maybe I'll use it to gut a deer or something.

Yes, they will give any One Piece Knife the "Spa Treatment". They sandblast the KG Gun Kote off and re-spray it on, as well as sharpen and such. Use it and enjoy it. The KG Gun Kote is tough and durable. One day when you decide to make it a safe queen, you can send it in and have it redone and it will be like new.

Yeah I guess you guys are right. May as well have fun using it! I'm not going to sell it anyway.
