I got a used small sebenza without paper and box. It has number "96" inscribed on the handle near the lanyard hole. The blade has no markings. Does anyone know what the number means? And what steel it has?
Thanks.
I will post pictures if necessary.

96 is the year !

no markings on the blade is normal, there is a "s" on S30V blades, but 96 is too old for that steel.

i think it must be ATS34 or maybe BG42 (again, 96 is perhaps too old for BG42).

About 10 years ago CRK introduced the new style sebenza.
now commonly called the regular style. The first 200 made were numbered back near the lanyard hole, yours was the 96th one made.
Originally, these were to be BG42 but the steel was not available immediately so most of the early ones were made of leftover ATS34.
Nice find, good luck with it.

Dave,
I think you are confusing the numbering near the lanyard hole with numbering near the CR logo. 96 in this case should indeed stand for the year the handles were manufactured.

John,

You may be right,
I was assuming the number 96 is on the front of the scale.
If it is on the inside then it would be the year and batch number.

In the case of the original new style release I was referring to, the number was near the lanyard hole not near the the CR logo.

There's a pic on the other forum. it's on the outside right near the lanyard hole.

Dave,
I was not aware that some regular sebenzas had numbers on the outside of the handle near the lanyard hole. If it is on the outside then I am sure that I am wrong about number being the date. Quite tricky that the number is a 96 which resembles a year, rather than any of the other numbers it could have been.

DaveH,
Can you give a link to this pic?

Leemovie,

Was the knife you found like this

I just picked this up on Ebay mostly because 76 is special to me. I didnt really know what it was either so I more or less bought it for the "76".

E-Bay Link

Hope this might help.
