I have an Northfield # 251208 J LP Amber Jig Bone. On the Great Eastern Cutlery Production List for 2008 there's 2 separate categories I think it can fit it. Not sure which because the tube has the "J" and the "LP".

From GEC 2008 Production List:

#251208 LPJ
Amber Jig - 6 pcs. no serial number

# 251208 LP
Amber Jig Bone - 50 pcs. serialized, 29 pcs. no serial number

1. Which is it? It says 1 of 50 on the blade but it's not serialized. The tube says "J" but the "J" listing from the production list says 6 pieces produced.

2. What is the difference here in the list between a knife labeled "J" (Jack) and a non Jack? I tried searching the pictures on the GEC website but none of the 2008 models have the descriptions that the later produced models have in the background of their pictures. So what is a 25 Jack and a 25 non Jack?

Thanks for any help and the pictures will be in the next post.

My guess is since the "J" is before the "LP" on the tube, (not "LPJ") and that yours does not have a serial number, you have one of the 29 non-serialized LP knives.
Of course this is only a guess, and there is a 99.9999987% chance I am mistaken.

Looks a lot more like Horsecut Bone on your Jack 25 to me. Could the tube be for another knife?

I have that exact knife and it's a horse cut bone. IMO, your tube is mislabeled as an amber jig.

I bought the knife from a dealer, Docs Knife Works. I guess he could have mixed up the tube with another knife or it could have been mislabeled by GEC.

Weird though, I don't even see a clip point blade with horse cut Bone in the Northfield section of the 2008 production list.

Yes, it's mysterious, could it be Black Walnut Bone? The tang stamp corresponds to Amber jig but it just doesn't look like any of their Amber Jig I've ever seen.

You should perhaps contact Christine T at GEC for confirmation.

Whatever, it's a really nice looking example:thumbsup:

Bet it has a strong pull....:D

Thanks to everyone who's responded. It's a sweet knife, first GEC I bought from a dealer. I found it a few months ago, it was a cool score stumbling onto an older 25.

Will, the small blade is a nail breaker but not the worst I've found on the GEC's I have. The larger blade is ok but a little tight. I appreciate the suggestion to contact Christine. I'll do that later today.

It does look like jigged walnut bone to me, one of 2 unserialized.

I'm not familiar enough with the different handles yet to recognize them so I appreciate the guidance. Seems to be obvious now that it's not what the tube says though. Jigged walnut bone and horse cut bone are both being mentioned.

One thing that's not been answered though. What does a 25 Jack versus a 25 Barlow versus a regular 25 mean? Do they look different in obvious ways or is it the blade choices?

All barlows are jacks, but not all jacks are barlows.

Barlows have a large bolster, on one end only.

#25 is a GEC model number, for a 3 inch jack knife.
