Gentlemen,

I know this tool is not an Axe, Tomahawk or a Hatchet, however, it is a Disston tool and I think it is used for saws. I searched around on the internet and I can not find anything about it or anything that looks like it. It appears to be some sort of saw vise....I think. I picked it up at an antique store for $10. Please help, thanks. Matt

If a saw was clamped under the thumb screws what would the lever do? Could it be for straightening kinks?

That's what I was also thinking. The lever closes the center together. Maybe straightening bent teeth, like on a cross cut saw.

I think it is for circlular saw blades. I have know idea how it works. There is a number on it?

Here is a test run with a crosscut saw clamped on, I'm think it is not meant for straightening bent teeth. I could be wrong.

It could be listed in one of these Disston catalogs that can be downloaded here (Note: the site is temporarily down this week):

I'm amazed by the specialized saw sharpening devices shown in this Disston booklet from 1874:

Not sure, but it looks like a saw set. There were all kinds of different saw-set designs developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I've never seen one like this before, and it may be missing parts.

degard +1 >> I would say it looks to be a Mechanical Saw Set (used to adjust the "set" of the saw teeth - which controls the kerf width if the saws cut). When I used to sharpen saws on job site - wood frame construction, I did it manually along with sharpening with a file (days b4 carbide tipped blades).
