I have a Cold Steel Lock Back Folder that I am trying to identify. It is approx. 6.25" open with 2.75" blade. The blade is marked Ventura, Calif, made in Japan on one side and Cold Steel, San Mai on the other. The handle is textured rubber (very sticky) and came with a nylon sheath that can be worn horizontal or vertical.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Nathaniel. Does your folder have a tanto blade? If it does, then what you have is one of Cold Steel's Shinobu folders. These lockback folders were discontinued several years ago, but they did have those rubbery (Kraton) handles and came in several sizes. The steel (San Mai) is laminated 420J2 on the sides for flexibility with an AUS-8 core for edge retention. If I'm not mistaken, they also had clip point versions called Clip-Mates or something.

That may be right but I cannot find any pictures to confirm what it is. It does not have the tanto blade so I guess it is the ClipMate?

Anyone else?

Thanks,

I think Cosmic is right. I have both the large and the small Tanto tips.

The lock is extremely strong. I knew they would be discontinued - I liked the construction, so I bought the two.

They should bring you good use.

It would appear you have a Clipmate.

I had a medium, which I think yours may be. It was probably the best CS folder I ever owned. It should give you years of very hard use.

Sure sounds like the Clipmate. One of the handle scales came off on mine, it looks like they were held on by an adhesive not much else. That is the only negative thing I have found on mine in almost 12 years of having it.

I wonder if Cold Steel will repair it? How is Cold Steel on repairing knives?
