Can anyone help me I am looking for a custom made knife. I’ am looking for a knife similar in design to Ray Mears Woodlore knife. Ray’s knives are very expensive and are back ordered until October 2003. Can some one please recommend or suggest a custom blade smith.

I’ am looking for a Carbon Steel, full tang, flat ground Scandinavian design blade. I would like the blade to be around 3.5” - 4” long. I want the grind profile without a secondary bevel, so it’s easy to maintain in the field. The back of the blade (spine) needs to have a sharp edges (non-finished) so it can spark or scrape a firesteel.

The handle needs to be 4” long and made of wood or antler.

The Sheath needs to be leather and can be carried around the neck or belt (I’ am a lefty).
I want the sheath to have an integral sleeve to hold a FireSteel.

Any help, or Ideas would be appreciated

Thanks - Ron

I'm pretty sure that Bagheera had one made up - and that he'll be here to tell you about it.
If not check his posts.

Hi Ron,

I just saw your question, OldJimbo was correct, I have one already it was made by the Texas knifemaker Chuck Hallberg, he made an Ray Mears copy in CPM 440V with a hollow ground blade, very nice Desert Iron Wood grips and mosaic pins and a nice pouch style sheath with a total 'flap' closure.

I have now one being made by R.W. Clark and this one is made in O1 Carbon steel, 5/32" thick will have a true Scandinavian grind, tapered tang, beautifull burl wood grip and will have differential hardening causing a beautifull hamon.

Ron, if you're interested give Ron Clark a call or send an email, I know there were other Forumites that wanted to have a 'copy' of my knife. Talk over the price with Ron you won't be disappointed.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

I too am looking for a knife like the Woodlore that Ray Mears markets. Any one serious about making it?

Matt Cook (Pinoy Knife)is helping me. He is a great guy, and willing to make anything you want. The Sheath he is making is leather and can be carried around the neck or belt, and will also include an integral sleeve to hold a FireSteel. Give him a call or send him an email, tell him I sent you.
Thanks-

Ron M

Matt's web site is www.pinoyknife.com

Here is a picture of what he is making for me.

That Pinoy guy must be one heck of a fast knifemaker as 3 days after your question about help for a custom knife he has one already practically finished for you ;)

Looks like a nice knife, seems hollow ground or not?

Post a pic when it's ready, best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Hello all

I hate to throw a spanner in the works, and you probably have your knife by now. But surely the main feature of the Ray Mears knife (the full flat scandinavian grind) is missing? It is hollow ground right?

You could try www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk practically identical blades

Greeting's all !! yes i Understand that the Grind on the Knife i Made is a Bit Different !! it was Decided by "Ron " that a Hollow would Better suit Him !! i Also made the Knife a Full tang so it Would not be Damaged by "Clubbing " it into Wood or a Animal I Am Attaching 2 Pictures of Knives i Built for this "Project " Ron Chose the Horn Handled one !! I Don't like to "Barrow Someone Elses Design but if That is Exactly what a Customer Want's what can i do ?? I May Start a Like of "Pukko Knives if there is a Sincere Interest ??

I would be interested in a pukko line up, if they be flat ground:)

What sort of price would you be asking for such a knife?

Any problems shipping to the UK?

Will

You might want to check out another British knife maker:

http://www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk/

The Bison Bushcraft knife sounds like what you after. From what I've heard there every bit as good as the Mear's knife and cheaper too. It also comes with a leather sheath that will hold a firesteel (neck or belt mount).

Buy British ;)
