I thought this would be the place to start asking question about how to mount my Simonich Bitterroot (kydex sheath) to my new Black Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon backpack. I was thinking somewhere around te top of the shoulder strap where the adjustment strap hangs down OR down near the D-ring.

I want to let it ride upside down on the should strap, and I am needing some suggestions of how bext to do that. I will post a pic of the knife and sheath and a link to the pack and you guys give me your suggestions. The pack is MALICE friendly and with the kydex sheath - I would think that I have quite a few options without having to buy a whole different sheath. Thanks in advance for your help.

Lashing??
Maybe an X across the sheath...'course there's only 3 holes. Maybe lashing, and the top tied into the D ring so that it doesn't fall down...Just a few ideas.

Dude,
Is this your primary blade? Or is it an extra? If it is your primary...I'd say keep it closer than your backpack harness. That way if you lose the pack, you still got your knife at least.

Can't say I favor an upside down carry much...even without the worry of losing it in an emergency, sheathing it can be a booger unless you are using two hands and are paying attention....especially at night when one hand is on a flashlight... fool around and you will poke yourself in the chin or worse.

Maybe this knife has some kind of magnetic jobby to keep the blade inside the sheath...don't know never seen one of Mr. Simonich's sheaths. Or maybe it has a retention thong doohickey?

I don't suppose you will like this idea but most of the guys I ever knew who wore LBE's used green duct tape for retaining a lot of equipment. Makes a bit of a mess when you want to remove it...kind of gunky. But it stays put.
Somebody might suggest ranger tabs. You gotta keep an eye on them too...sometimes the rubber gives a bit, or worse breaks... then you find yourself in the boonies sans knife.

Also I tried once to do this same deal...only I used a bunch of green nylon cord to wrap the sheath onto my pack strap. After a long day in the harness that cord had rubbed me raw on my chest where the cord "washboard" was.
I "86"ed the whole deal. Ranger tabs will grab a bit too. Tape is sort of slick.

You might try to post on the survival forum...them guys have tried it all.

Not sure I helped. Somebody will prolly spend a lot of time trashing what I just wrote. Just my pesos for the kitty. Looks like a neat pack/blade combo!
Pretty cool kit! Bet it carries good once you get it figgered out.

Yeah, what he said :D :D

I would definately post this in the survival forum, Shoptalk isn't as refined in this area! ;)

Good comment on the cord, I've never tried it before, just heard about it...a lot of good comments. ;)

David,

I am currently dealing with the same setup, but on a camelback assault. I USED TO make knives and kydex sheaths, as well as cordura. I am now buying the equipment to make knives and sheaths again, but it will be a while before I can get going. I would make a cordura sheath, the maker of the pack should be able to provide you with the material manufacturer (Camelback did for me) so you get an exact match. Then sew the sheath directly to the harness, and I would use a retention strap. Many may not agree with this, but I have made several very nice sheath liners out of 3 ring binders with the heavy black plastic covers. It molds just like kydex, holds its shape just like kydex, you just cant get it in desert camo. I carried a handmade knife concealed in a leather jacket, upside down carry, no retention strap for over 2 years, it never fell out nor did I take it out. This was overseas, not here in the states. Nice knife, by the by
