Hey everyone, this is my first post. I've been reading this forum for awhile now and love this Benchmade section.

So I have a presidio ultra 522 that I bought from the px and it is my first higher end knife, I love it. But I'm thinking about changing it up a little bit. I already have a deep carry clip being sent to me from Benchmade (awesome customer service) but what I really want to do is take the spacer out of the back and put in standoffs instead. Reason for that being, I'm in the military and this is a pretty rugged knife, I use it everyday for a lot of things, I don't abuse it at all, but it's used a lot and collects a lot of dirt, grime, and sand (currently), so it gets a lot of that collected inside.

I've found a few websites that sell standoffs and new hardware but was wondering where you all recommend ordering from? I'm currently deployed so it would have to be an online order.

Also a few technical questions.. What are the specs for the screws that are stock in this knife? I know it's a button head torx screw but what thread, diameter, and length are they so if I wanted to order threaded standoffs and new hardware I order the right parts. And what width of standoff do I need?

And lastly, I have the black half serrated 440c blade that came with the knife but I'm thinking I'd like a plain blade. I know I can get the plain 440c blade from Benchmade but is there other blades that will fit in this knife that are S30v or 154cm from a different model?

I realize this post is much longer than it needs to be so if your still reading it, I appreciate it and would be thankful for any info someone can share.

Thank you!

Hello Duke, welcome aboard and thanks for your service.

I am sure there are ones here that can answer your questions regarding the thread count and specs. I believe the 522 is based on the standard aluminum handled Presidio models, so a blade change is possible. Many of us don't use or need the serrations; a sharp plain edge will do nicely in most situations. I've owned both large and small Ultra models in 440C and like the textured handles. They're tough and light at the same time.

For direct questions to Benchmade, their number is 800-800-7427. Emails to them are slower than the call, but a lot depends on where in the world you're deployed.

Hope this helps some. One good idea is; if you like that Benchmade, get another when you can...and maybe that's where you can swap blades for better steel and a plain edge.

Good luck and stay safe.

Joe

Duke...

Welcome to BF. Thank you for you service. I can't help with the screw size specs, but I can tell you that blades from another 522, a 520 (the original large Presidio model in 154CM) and a large Bone collector (D2 blade with a finger hole instead of thumb studs) should fit. Those blades are interchangeable in the original 520 models so I'm guessing that they'll work in the 522.

What I really wanted to tell you though is that Benchmade also has a forum on their web site that deals only with BM products. Many knowledgeable people are on that forum as well as the ones on BF. You might want to ask the same question over there.

Thank you for the info and advice I've got so far. I do like the presidio model very much, I can't call Benchmade at the moment but I've emailed back and forth with them a few times and they are very helpful. My last email I sent was regarding the standoffs and screw sizes and it's been a few days since they've got back to me. I'm hoping they have the answers and can get back to me soon.

Good news, I might be getting another Benchmade shortly, there's a 530 with satin plain edge and gray scales for a very good price online. I've been thinking about a knife that's much smaller and lighter for off duty. We'll see. Thanks again guys.

I did that very thing with a 520 a while back so here goes:
Total thickness of blade + washers is .175 (at least on the 520)
I couldnt find one that thickness, so i bought .190s and slowly worked my way down. The 520 uses two .500 T6 2X56 through screws that screw into the opposite scale, so i made my standoffs pass through for a 2x56 screw. Pretty sure the 520 and 522 are extremely similar in construction, unlike the Bone Collector mentioned above, which uses opposing handle screws that thread into the back spacer, not pass through and thread into the other handle. All blades should be interchangeable between these models. Hope this helps.

That is the exact info i was looking for! Thanks man I appreciate it. Going to do some shopping soon to try it out.

On a related note, I bought the 530! Very excited for it to arrive. It's a satin plain edge with gray scales and a black clip. I'll post pictures of all the above when I have them. Thanks again guys.
