arite i got a bayonette thats covered in rust i want to get rid of all that rubbish and polish it up...what do i need to do that?

Use some fine grit sandpaper, and work your way up to a finer grit, and then once it has a good shine use a polishing paste like metal-glo.

I bought a rusty old hatchet head at an antique shop last year for $5, took it to the the wire wheel on my bench grinder, turned out to be a Plumb Boy Scout hatchet, came out awesome. Took a lot of patience, got all the rust off on the wheel, polished it up with steel wool by hand, re-handled it, keep it by the fireplace now. Works better than my brand new Craftsman hatchet...

Soak it in WD 40 for a few days. Then wipe it down. Use a Brillo pad and hot water to remove the rust. Dry it with paper towels and soak it down with WD 40 again. Dry it and then oil it to prevent rust.

Yeah a water displacement oil will really make things easier. I don't know what tools you have but, you could use a belt sander if the rust is substantial, otherwise a coarse abrassive working your way up to as fine as you choose is best. Also a polish and/or protectant is a good idea.

If the rust isn't too bad and you don't want to risk scratching up the blade much, use a wire brush made of brass. Otherwise, you may be in for some grinding.
