My lovely significant other is going to be gifting me an Emerson Sheepdog for Christmas in a few short weeks but I am having a hard time deciding which blade shape I want to go with. It will be the satin finish plain edge version for sure, but I am hung up on Bowie or spear point. This knife won't (hopefully) see any of the "hard use" that Emerson markets them for, I just want one (why the heck not!). Realistically, paper and food will be the majority of things it cuts. So, BladeForums legion, help me make this decision.

I'd go with the bowie, unless you're planning to do bushcraft stuff with it,then I'd choose the spearpoint.I love a heavily pronounce clip point blade like the Bowie.

Always a bowie, unless you stand a good chance of stabbing someone AND it folds easier and allows you to sharpen both sides- then get a spear point.

I'm a DP person, myself, but, between a spear point and a Bowie.... Bowie, no question.

Can you explain what you mean by this?

An attempt at humor. Basically, bowies are better at everything. A spearpoint should only be considered if you have a design that the blade folds completely within the handle, allowing you to sharpen the opposite edge, and make a double-edged knife, i.e. like a true spear. Many/most folding knives don't completely encompass the blade in the handle. See: View attachment 597186

Makes good sense, I see your point especially about the double edge setup (which obvious doesn't apply here)...I'm about 75% sure I'm gonna go bowie!

It's not about what we like...choose what you like.
But, since you asked, I've got to go against the crowd. Get the spearpoint.

The blade shape that emerson calls a spear point looks more like a drop point to me. A spear point is s symmetrical blade that is often sharpened on both sides. I bet if you asked between a drop point and a bowie, you would get different results. But in this case I still prefer the Bowie

Spear Point

Spear/Drop points are stronger.

For food prep, spear/drop points and wharnies rule. Won't find clip points or bowies in a pro kitchen.

Bowies are only good for stabbing.
