i'm looking for a curved blade knife for carving spoons and cups.

i found the MORA 164, but i like options.

what do you use, and what would be another hook blade?

as always, thank you.
allen.

Here's one called the Carvin' Jack:

Flexcut (referenced in the link) has some really good, well-thought-out carving tools.

Got any pics of your work? Growing up, folks I knew would carve out various tools (pot lid lifters, spoons, forks, stick-stools, etc.) at the start of a campout and throw them in the fire on the last day. They'd carve new tools at the next campout.

PS - you're in Craven County? If that's NC, you're about three hours' drive from where I grew up. (Sylva/Franklin.)

im still new to carving.i have done 2 spoons so far, and i started to carve a small wooden boat today. i started carving because i needed some down time in between friends, my lady, classes and work. its a great way to relax.

so now im trying to score some proper tools.

by the way here is a link to my first spoon. i did it with a Becker Necker..and thats it.:

Well done - my first couple of spoons didn't have 'bowls', because I couldn't figure out how to hollow them out properly. But they made great diggers (for my son) & stir sticks (for my wife). :p By "Southern Pipe" in your post, I assume you mean "Southern Pine"?

Shucks, I usually just use the spey blade on a stockman for that stuff.

I will second the recommendation of the Carvin' Jack.

Here are a couple of projects I made a while back with mine.

that's cool. ^

Now you got me wanting that Carvin' Jack!

I'm in the middle of carving a spoon right now too. :)

I like Cape Forge woodcarving knives. If you would like to stick with Scandinavian style knives, check the ones at Pinewood Forge (I never tried any of them, but always hear very good things).

I use the hook knives (right and left) from Pinewood Forge and a #8-1/2" spoon gouge from Woodcraft. Both have been good choices for the spoons I carve. I also have found the Flexcut carving scrapers to be good for shaping and finishing spoon bowls.

I also have the carving jack, but I find its curved blade & scorp less useful because the handle gets in the way in many situations.

Northbay Forge is also worth a look. No personal experience with them, unfortunately.
