So im trying to pick
The RTAK II in 5160 but only .2 thick blade, micarta grips
RD9 in 5160 1 inch shorter blade length .25 thick, micarta grips
or BK9 only 1095 but .25 thick but no micarta

all cost $85 so price isn't the deciding factor.

im leaning toward the RTAK or RD9 because its 5160 and comes with micarta grips

what should i do?

If this knife's sole purpose is to chop, then you will be better off getting the RD9 or RTAK. It slightly out preforms the BK9.

If you are looking for a large knife that you can also chop with, then I would recommend the BK9. The weight distribution and comfortable handles will allow you to use it for lengthy amounts of time with any knife related task (including chopping and batoning).

I would go with the RTAK II or even a Junglas if you can swing the extra cash. The BK9 is the only one of your three choices that I have had and I just did not care for it. There are many people that are big fans of it though.

I really don`t like my original(Gingrich) RD9! edge is too thick and the handle needs a ton of work to be comfortable . I love my BK9 even with the factory plastic scales they didn`t even slip in cold rain , the blade just eats wood. I have no idea about the RTAK2 looks pretty cool but I heard murmurs of heat treat problems so I wrote it off .

The RTAK II is an awesome knife. I own a much lower end RAT in "only" 1095 and I've done things to that you would not believe. So in 5160, you could probably perform a vivisection on a rock if you felt there was some hidden treasure awaiting inside for you.

If it is just to chop, I would probably go with the BK-9 or a ESEE Junglas. Note. The steel on the BK-9 is 0.177" thick as I recall versus 0.25" like the BK-2.

But what I actually use is either a Condor Pack Golok or Village Parang for a short chopper. They are pure choppers.

Out of those 3 I'd go with the rtak. If money is no object, go with a Busse Battle Mistress.

I'd lean more in that direction as well, though Condor makes even more brutal choppers than those two. :D
