help me pick a new folder

I'm really itching to get myself a new folder, and I thought I might get a few suggestions.

My current EDC rotation is a BM941, BM750, BM710HS, BM806D2, BM Ritter Grip and a SAK Tinker.

Stuff that I don't like; tanto blades, chisel grinds, lockbacks, or liner locks. I can't carry an auto, so that's out. I don't really have any interest in a bali.

Knives that I like the look of, but don't know much about; Spyderco Para Military, Emerson Commander, Al Mar SERE.

I like my axis locks obviously, and I like big, beefy frame locks. Already mentioned that I'm not so hot on lockbacks or liner locks, but I'm not familiar with many other lock types. It's got to have a pocket clip.

Anyhow, those are just some thoughts off the top of my head. Let's say my budget is around $150 (that doesn't mean I would mind finding a cool $50 knife, just that $150 is my upper limit). Any suggestions?

The Al Mar SERE 2000 is a liner-lock, so you can remove it from your list. If you can find a Benchmade 721 (recently DC'd), that might be the one to get. Also, Camillus makes some nice "beefy frame locks" that are worth a look.

well, you have all my favorites with you already, so I don't have anything to add^^. (rittergrip/tinker/soon to be 806d2 I hope).

The Emerson Commander is also a liner lock, so if you really just won't have a liner lock then you can scratch that off your list too.

From the list you gave that leaves just the Spydie Para Military, which is indeed a nice knife. It uses a compression lock, which is somewhat similiar to a liner lock in operation only on the spine of the knife. If you don't like liner locks you might want to try it out first to see if you like it before buying.

Yeah, I definitely have my eye on that BM630, I'd like to handle one first. Maybe I can check out the compression lock on the Spyderco too. Then again, I might just save up the difference and get a Sebenza and be done with it.

I just noticed that New Graham Knives just posted some 630s for less than $140 in stock. That price is insane for such a nicely made folder considering the materials and all, I would say thats the best deal going on a production folder today bar none

The Paramilitary is a great EDC. The flat ground S30V blade really slices.

One that's not on your list that you might want to consider is the Camillus Dominator. Get one and then send it to Darrell Ralph to have him tune it and add bronze-phospher washers and a foldover/low profile clip. It's a real strong Ti framelock.

Billman,

If you are fine with a frame lock then I would suggest you also look into a Camillus EDC. They are great knives for the money, $50 for the 154-CM version, and about $70 for the D2 version. A real bargin for a great user knife.

I played with a BM630 and Spyderco Para today and neither one really jumped out at me. The BM630, I just didn't like the color and styling more that anything. And the Para just seemed too much like a liner lock. I don't know, maybe I'm overly picky.

But I did check out a BM520 and it was pretty sweet. It might go to the top of my short list.

I've never seen any of the Camillus knives in person, so I'll check those out the next chance I get.

Spyderco Cinook II, SERE is great, I have an Operator fixed blade and it is my favorite knife, the 2000 would be great, do they make one in S30V? How about a dominator by CUDA? Cuda makes good stuff.

Although the Paramilitary's Compression lock may look like a liner lock, it works on a completely different principle, and should be much stronger. Essentially, for the lock to fail, one of the pins would have to tear out of the handle. It's pretty heavy duty.
