I am thinking about a new knife. I want an more multipurpose knife, because I don't have space or money for another huge collection.

I'd like a fixed blade knife, kinda like a bush knife but maybe a little more combat-useful.
Throw some ideas at me..

Price? Size?

The ESEE Junglas is a very large knife that handles like a big fighter, but has the mass of a large outdoors knife.

The new Ontario Blackbird is a bushcraft-style blade, but with a real, comfortable guard (unlike most bushcraft knives).

Spyderco is reintroducing their Rock Salt in VG10, as the Schempp Rock. This is a large but surprisingly lightweight blade that makes a great all-around outdoors knife, or wicked fighter. You should be able to find one for less than $200, when they're available.

I really like the ESEE-3. I never feel under-knifed with it, it's small and light enough to carry around all day, best sheath in the biz and as an extra bonus (not a concern in Texas) it meets NYC length restrictions.

Hey, KA-BAR makes a 3/4 size version of their classic fighter (5.25" blade)
That sounds interesting..

I would possibly look towards the Grohmann knives if you are leaning more toward bush than combat.
They could be used in a fight, but are not purpose meant for that.
The Canadian Army had them in the system for years.
It fits in the price range but not totally in the use range.
Bouncing ideas as suggested.

Grohmann has an interesting website. Believe it or not, they actually make a polearm. Not as a replica, but for actual, daily use. (A whale-butchering spear)

I am leaning towards the ontario RD6 at the moment..

I just bought a Ranger Ontario RD6 Bush, and its awesome! ive already used it to perform light chopping and splitting tasks and it rocks. It comes hair-popping sharp too! the handle on the thing just feels right

only issue is the sheiths are not good at all, unless you form fit the kydex insert thats inside it

That gave me an idea. Check out a Sog Seal Pup, the one with a nylon sheath.
I've got one and I think it's a lot of knife for the money.

If you go Kabar I think you should get a Becker something...

when I get money - I'm going with this:
Ontario Ranger Series Afghan Knife 5" Plain Edge, Black Micarta Handle
The blade is 1/4" thick - kami style !

Just got a Ka-Bar full size USMC today and am very happy with it just looking at the quality of its fit and finish. :)

But I must admit that the Gringrich designed Ranger Afghan series have a lot of appeal to them as well. ;)

I have been looking at those for a while now. Let me know how you like it when you get it, will you?

Received my Ontario Ranger Bush knife in the mail today.
My first impulse is to get a refund.

It looks GREAT, but the sheathe is unbelievably bad. It is nylon with a 1/2" wide plastic rectangular tube in which the blade sits. The damned thing RATTLES. (in both directions) That's good for a soldier, don't ya think?

The knife is paper-slicing sharp, no complaints there.
The micarta handle is very smooth, almost slick, and with only a lip for a handguard, I have grave concerns about thrusting with this knife. I feel certain I'd lose a finger.

It is nice and thick, so I doubt I'd break it. I like a hefty knife, but I think I'm going to send it back and try something else.
(Let me know if somebody else wants it)

After considering things, I decided to spend the money and get something decent.
I am sending the Ontario Ranger POS back in the morning.
I just ordered a Blackjack Model 125 in green micarta.

Danny, look at the Seal Pup Elite, the updated model with a better handle, great blade, you won't slip up onto it, excellent woods knife, but a (small) combat blade -- the one thing SOG really knows how to do.

I appreciate the suggestion, but I know blackjack knives are good and the more I look at the 125, the more I like it. good for bush, good for combat.
