Help me pick a second EDC blade

Preface: this is a totally "wanna be" idea. I work in an office, so I don't have any need for this except in some crazy fever dream where I get lost on a business trip and somehow need to survive with what I have on me. :D

Looking for a knife version of the M40 spearhead basically. Something that is a little larger and more robust than the ESEE AH-1, and can be used as a knife.

Specs: 3" or less blade, minimal overall, fixed blade, able to be fixed to a stick as spearhead, single or double edged as long as the point is sufficient.

Current contenders: Marbles/Condor/Cold Steel Bird & Trout, Condor Windfang, Mini Hoffman Harpoon, TOPS Shango, TOPS Key B, TOPS Desert Fox, TOPS Idaho Arrowhead, Becker Necker, Eskabar, Meyerco Thumb Drive II.

I will likely have a LM Skeletool on me at least, planning to switch to a new Wave or Charge TTi, so I have some other blades/tools at my disposal.

So, have at! Tell me what an idiot I am if you like, as long as you throw in a recommendation. :D

EDIT: I'd throw in some links, but I can't tell which sites/makers are approved and which aren't from the rules. If anyone wants to enlighten me, I'll add them.

Maybe the ESEE Candiru? You didn't say how much you wanted to spend but you can get a custom made of your own design for relatively cheap. Under 100 for sure.

Edit: I have an Izula 2 on me sometimes for the "just in case" thing so you're not alone. Sometimes it's fun to think about just walking off into the forest. :D

I would definitely check out one of the new Becker Eskabars in D2 steel. I've not had the pleasure of handling one yet, but I do have an Eskabar in 1095 cro van. D2 is an awesome steel. Holds an edge longer and more resistant to corrosion than 1095 c.v., and the Eskabar in D2 comes as a bare-metal knife; no coating on it, which should make it a slightly smoother slicer.

I'd get a custom, get it just the size you want with the materials you want. Can easily be head for a good price from one of the many makers here on the forum.

Not sure how much I wanted to spend, that's part of why the Meyerco is in the list. They're only like $10.

I have a friend that's a smith, maybe I should just ask him to whip something up. I was leaning towards stainless though, and I don't think he likes to work with stainless that much.

I don't have a F/B that small, but the first thing that came to my mind was a Remora - BK13; 2.3" blade.
Second was Candiru w/ 2" blade.
My choice would be BK24 (D2 Eskabar). I'll probably be picking one up soon, but it's over 3".
If you're serious about under 3", but want as close as possible, look no further than the ever popular Izula.
Of my list, only the Remora is stainless, but D2 comes close.
I guess I trust ESEE and Becker, and their warranties.
Have fun!

I don't own a fixed blade that small either, but 3" is the office limit. If I could carry a 4" or 5", I would.

I have used and can recomend the CS B&T and a couple of Bryan Breeden "final option" knives. I woudl recomend contacting a couple of makers here. You would get exactly what you want. Draw it on a napkin and these guys can bring it to life, a simple kydex slip sheath for the edge and you can fit it in a wallet.

This..... I keep my F1 in my work truck most days... Ya know, just in case :)

what do you plan to spear?
use your knife to make a good wooden spear. you break that thing on the end of a stick and you'll be SOL.
if you let go of the strap-on requirement it really opens up the options.

of course you should get what you *want* because this is slightly fantastical. agreed, you can get a decent small custom EDC for $100 or less.

ESEE Izula or an Izula II would be my choice. Even for serious work, it is just about perfect.

I would say it's entirely fantastical, and I am a little embarassed to even ask. :o I agree that the realistic plan would be to just use a wooden spear, especially for spearfishing. This idea is for a last ditch defensive spear, so no plan to try to spear fish or frogs for food, just fend of predators.

I've been seriously considering both the custom option and a D'Eskabar. That way I can have something that is a nice and practical knife instead of just a fantasy blade.

Izula, Candiru, TOPS Tibo or D2 Eskabar would be my pick.

That Condor Windfang is a piece of crap. I tried to like it and ended up giving it away to someone who thought it "looked cool", but I'm sure will rarely use it.

Unless you use something like surgical tubing to accelerate your thrust, you may find spearing scaly fish with a wooden tipped spear a bit of a chore. When you hit the fish, you have to break through the scales and a fish is suspended in water so the body moves with the impact of the spear. "Pinning" teh fish against the bottom helps but is a little difficult to do.

Honestly, a sharped 16 penny nail makes a better spear than a wooden one. In my hiking sticks(bamboo)- I expoxy a nail(with a cut and flared barb) into a T nut(hardware store) and insert the nail inisde the hollow bamboo. I use a cane tip with a hole in the center, then tape over that with electrical tape. To use the gig for fish/frogs, remove tape, attach strand from paracord to hole in T nut, insert nail inisde out through cane tip, replace cane tip and tie strand higher up on walkign stick.
I have about .75 invested and have tested it numerous times on fish and frogs.

Or pick up a CS B&T to use as a small knife and improvise a picked up stick. Both ways work.

Hmm... I could put some sharpened nails in the skeleton handle of some of these, and wrap in paracord. That would give me options both ways.

mrn8, why the TOPS Tibo vs. the other TOPS choices?

If you're on a budget and want a cheap-ass knife you can beat the crap out of and just about fits the description, Gerber makes a "Paracord Knife" that comes with a paracord wrapped handle, I've heard it's really strong for the price and you can buy a bunch and keep one on you, in the car, in your desk, etc.
