You may find this hard to believe, but the good ol cold steel mini pal isn't cutting it for me anymore

I'm in the market for a decent neck knife, and I think I have it narrowed down between two models: Emerson LaGriffe and REKAT Fang.

The Fang looks pretty sweet, but I haven't heard much about the LaGriffe model. Would anyone care to enlighten me and help me choose? Pleeeease don't say "buy both" as I only have one neck

If anyone can think of a better one within the same price range, lemme know..

Thanks.

I did a rather large review of the La Griffe some months ago. I believe it was posted in the Review forum, so see if you can find it there. As for my opinion, I would go with the La Griffe if you want a self-defense knife and a Fang if you want more utility or a larger blade is important. Both knives are EXCELLENT, and both have very good sheaths. The REKAT is light for its size, but compared to the La Griffe, it's like carrying a brick around your neck. The La Griffe is small, light, and built for the purpose of non-lethal self-defense (unless you get unlucky and nail the attacker or you are a martial arts master) while the La Griffe, while usable for self-defense, is more aimed at general light duty. The REKAT has a pretty thick edge and point, so I would recommend thinning it out on a stone a few degrees, but otherwise either knife is great, assuming you buy it for the right purpose. Also, the REKAT comes with a multicarry sheath while, unless you modify it yourself, the Emerson is neck-only carry. I find myself carrying the la griffe more, but i have so many utility-type neck knives that I have trouble choosing! if you want STRICTYLY a utility knife, I would point you in the direction of the Little Camper by Running Dog Knife Company. Awesome knife for the money! REALLY awesome knife, actually. I LOVE it! Link to my review:

don't know about the REKAT, but i love my LaGriffe. turning out to be a very useful tool. 154CM just keeps on cutting. i covered the sheath with a thin piece of black garment weight leather and IMHO it looks very nice.

Tom,

I am neck knife fan & have both the models you mentioned. IMO, Chiro nailed it with his statement, "go with the La Griffe if you want a self-defense knife and a Fang if you want more utility or a larger blade is important."

Now, if you want to muddy the waters a bit & explore some alternative selections, follow the "toys" link in my sig. Have fun choosing.

Both are excellent. The fang has been discontinued

so I would probably get one before they are gone. I will agree that the La Griffe is almost purely for defensive purposes, although it would make an excellent box cutter. The fang is a little more versatile.

Hold your horses!

At least check out Bud Nealy's designs, like the Y2K (forget the name, it's a great knife), and the one (forgot the name, that I bought) with G10 slabs on the handle with beveled lightening holes drilled through the full tang blade.

The la griffe is very small and though nice for sure, it doesn't give the impression when shown to an attacker (or cardboard box for that matter) of being a "man's" knife. Good luck - it's sure fun to shop, isn't it?
