Hello folks,
I've been enjoying these forums and I really appreciate all the great info you people provide. I want to buy my first Spyderco today and I am leaning towards a Delica 4 but wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything before I jump.

My budget is $75 and I'm looking for...
- EDC folder with blade between 2.75 - 3 inches (nothing over 3)
- Full flat grind blade
- non black handle (this is a want but I'll go black for the better knife)
- blade steel vg10 or better/comparable

Have I already picked the winner in the Delica 4 or are the others to consider? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

yep Delica is a great knife , now the choices saber grind or full flat grind or spydie edge or combo edge ... decisions desisions

For a few dollars more you could have the Sage1 but it's black. The Delica4 should not disappoint. It's one of the best edc knives of all time IMHO.

Delica - pick your flavor -- its a classic designed pretty much to fulfill your criteria....

Yeah, you answered your own question. Delica for this knife, then black bladed Para2 for that better knife. :)

Thanks guys. I ordered the Delica 4. But I have my eye on that Sage 3 for the future.

The FFG Delicas/Enduras are simply awesome knives especially considering how little they cost. It was a great idea for Spyderco to make their own FFG versions of these classics.

Given your requirements, definitely the Delica. You can get blue, green, purple, brown, or gray handles. Plus you could afford to throw in a Ladybug 3 for your keychain, if you like the "grenade" look. (So much stuff on the keychain that it looks like a grenade in mid explosion) The only problem is that soon you'll want another, and another and...

I agree with everyone saying the Delica...it's the only one I can think of for that price without a black handle and with an FFG. Look around and you can get one for about $50. Maybe spend your extra $25 on a ladybug, those are awesome for tiny backup EDC's--you'd be surprised how capable those little things are! That's what I'd go with, a Delica FFG and Ladybug. You could even get them matching in purple. The Persistence would be good too, although it has a black handle.

If you were willing to go over 3" and have a black handle, my No. 1 recommendation when someone asks for an EDC around $70 is always the VG-10 Stretch 2. For $70, it's probably my favorite EDC ever (definitely tied for it). It beats out some knives that go for well over $100. But I'm sure you'll enjoy the Delica as well. It's by far my favorite knife for around $50, and an awesome EDC. Good intro to Spyderco knives as well, cause it's one of their classic models that's been around for over 20 years!

Good choice on the delica. I had switched off to some other blades, and traded my g10 delica a while back. Fortunately, I was able to pick up another one. I have been using it non stop for the last 2 weeks, and I totally forgot how much I love this blade. The blade shape, ergonomics and just everything! I love it so much! Delica and sage series are IMO the two best EDC series that spyderco makes. The paramilitaries are fantastic too, but starting to get a bit big at that point.

Everybody's first Spyderco should probably be either a Delica or an Endura. Nice thing about the Delica is that the folks at Spyderco know the world...the blade is 2 7/8" making it legal in many workplaces (like mine) and/or municipalities that have length restrictions. And quite frankly it is not a tiny little knife. It has a good handle and you can really get a grip on it and do some work with it.

Both had VG-10 blades (and other steels like ZDP189). I like the flat ground versions but they have hollow ground versions as well. Plain edge or serrated.

The various Salt models are very similar but they are made of H1 steel which is, apparently, absolutley rustproof...the stuff just will not rust because of all the nitrogen in it. They are constructed in very similar manner.

Revceived my Delica 4 on Thursday and I am very pleased with this knife. The blade is sick sharp (based on how it sliced through paper) and the handle in hand feels perfect. love the loud lockup click and one hand closing this kickback is much easier than I thought it would be.

My first Spyderco is a winner and now I want more!! Ordered a persistence that should arrive today (how can you not buy that knife at that price?) and I'm deciding what the next spydy will be (sage, manix, stretch, caly3). Thanks folks for all the help.

Very timely post as I am also thinking about my first Spyderco.
But I'm considering the Dragonfly as well as the Delica.
Can those that are familiar with these 2 knives help me with pro/con differences?

Thanks

KY70, Delica 4 was the right choice :) I EDC mine every day and i have a lot of Spydercos to pick from (including about 6 Delicas). Next you should look at the Ladybug and Stretch 2. New Dragonfly 2 is awesome too.

AC12, screw it, you need both, it's not a choice :D
