Im basically looking for a good all around knife that would be used for survival, camping, and maybe a SHTF tactical roll. I am looking mainly at the ESEE 6 or the Becker BK7 and between the two probably leaning more toward the ESEE. I am also hearing alot about Busee and Ontario but they dont attract me quite as much. Id like to keep it around the $100 range but a little more or less is fine. So... any suggestions?

The cold steel SRK sounds like it should fit the bill. You'll have trouble finding the ESEE6 around $100 but if you do, grab that instead!

I do not support Cold Steel. Iv had many many bad experiences with them and their blades in the past.

i carried an 2002 model sog seal knife for literally 10 yrs. now im packin a full size extreme ratio fulcrum. if id have been on this forum before the purchase i would have spent more time looking at the knifemakers. if you found a custom you like which would be easy in the 200 range you could pay a 100 now and the rest upon completion. theres some amazing guys on here take your time and email some of them they may work w you depending on the blade steel youre looking for. i was looking at busse for awhile and realized theyre pretty pricey considering what else is out there. and when it comes to a survival knife youre going to get what you pay for. if youre actually going out in the wild be prepared for the worst and youll always be good to go.

Yea I would like to stay away from custom knives just because I want something I can thump on and still have a warranty that I can count on.

i understand that. but realize that some of these guys use steels that are much better then what youll get paying the same for a production. i dont sit anything on a shelf. if i buy it, i use it for what its intended for.

I'm in a similar boat... it's a toss-up between the Fallkniven A1 and S1.

I have one real (not a neck-knife) fixed-blade, Strider MFS. Archman's tip to remove the coating and lengthen the handle were right on the money. But this knife has only whetted my appetite for fixies.

The Scrap Yard 711 is a great knife and when they released the knife it was wrongly priced (they priced it made with SR-77 , but then made them with SR-101) . They have announced that the price will go up , but they have allowed them to continue at the $119 price untill this Sunday afternoon . The price will then be increased by $20 . This is a great oppertunity to buy the knife with no risk . If you decide to sell it later you'll get more than you paid if you order it before Sunday .

The esee and beckers are fine knives- I think you are on the right track. Beyond that, the Scrap Yards and new 4-5" Swamp Rat are great as well (I'm a fanatic for both companies). You could also take a peak and what Dfarmer has available in the fixed blade section. He makes great knives at a great price.

Could also look at the Condor line. You could get a chopper and bush knife at your price point.

For the price you are working with I would go with the Bk7 for sure. I have it and its big brother the BK9 and you can get them on "Eprey" for like $60-70 range so you could get a smaller Becker as well for $30 so you could get two great knifes in your $100 range. Just go look at both forums on here and see the support for each.. Just saying one is BIGGER.

This is too onesided, throwing in a new competitor

A US made Becker BK2 is a tough act to follow. Less than $65 shipped from Amazon. Hefty 5"-er - carbon steel. Heck, a Buck 119 Special, available for ~$40 at WallyWorld, is a decent such knife - US-made & SS, too - and easily found & evaluated, as well.

I have an A1, S1, BK7, BK2, ESEE 4 and 6. They are all fine blades but I find myself using my A1 and S1 the most. I love the grind, grip, sheath (most turn their nose at their sheath as I initially did only to love it's minimal design the more I used it). Grip is excellent in cold, wet, etc. They have taken a beating beyond all mentioned above (mostly because they are my main blades and get the most work). The grind has performed well beyond my expectations. Chopping is better than I expected considering the size. The A1 chops much better than the ESEE 6...I did a head to head a few years ago and post the pictures here. The fallkniven handles also eat up a ton of shock. I initially called my fallkniven a big steak knife until I used it. The steel is excellent and easy to maintain. Convex edges to me perform better than any other grind I have used to date overall. The only knock I have is the warranty. When you compare the warranty to ESEE nothing comes close. Oh and I threw a bark bravo into the mix and it didn't even come close to my fallkniven edges rolled and it had a slick wax polished micarta handle that I thought I would like but hated the more I used it.

I imagine it's just a typo, but what's a "SHTF tactical ROLL?" You've got my imagination going, are there other tactical pastries that I'm not aware of?

Don't you have the standard canned bear-claw survival food? I don't leave home without it

but to the OP, try out the BK2 its one of the top contenders for sharpened prybars for a reason

You won't go wrong with any of the knives listed so far. Are there stores nearby where you can get a sense of the feel of at least some of them? As a confirmed Beckerhead I know you'll do great with any of the BK2, BK7 or BK9, but much as I love some BK&T action I'd buy the Fallkniven S1 in your situation.

I'd consider a two-knife option, which is possible in your price range.
A Condor Golok or Parang, or even a Barong if you like something real pointy, and a smaller utility knife like a Mora #2 or a Condor Bushcraft or Condor Sapien.
I have found that the large choppers like a Golok or Parang really do a lot better chopping than a 7" or 8" knife, and the smaller utility knives do a lot better at the little chores because they can be handled with better precision.
And you can get this kind of combo for a lot less than $100.
And if it comes down to using it for defense purposes for some reason, I expect that a 17"-blade Parang or 14"-blade Golok or Barong, will see you thru it better than any 7" knife will.
And the carry weight is not really much different. Some of these big thick camp knives like Busse and such are over a pound.

I tried the "one-knife" idea with these 7" and 8" size heavy-duty knives, and my preference now is a large chopper which could even be a machete or a kukri or parang or golok or barong, and a small knife like a Mora is a more useful set-up, IMO.

For the price, it is quite hard to beat Scrap Yard Knives.

Becker or ESEE are in the same ballpark, IMO.
