Long story short, my knife collection is down to a composite leek, which means that I am in the market for a tougher/heavy duty knife.
The couple of knives that i've been thinking about are a kershaw blur (maybe in S30V), ZT350, or a benchmade with axis lock. I'm open to all suggestions, and here are my criteria:

  • 3-4" (or close to it)
  • under $150
  • relatively heavy duty

thanks for all of your help

I just ordered a Citadel/Fox Deimos for ~$140. Blade is 4.5", I got the black/micarta version. Also comes in polished/wood. I was also looking at the Spyderco Navaja.

Manix 2 might fit the bill a bit. Benchmade has a number of good options. I spent a bunch of time looking through yesterday, ended up ordering a Rift. Onslaught should be in your price range, as is the Ritter Griptilian. 350 is nice for heavy duty, but I ended up not liking mine. It's headed out soon.

Spyderco gayle bradley or benchmade 275 might be a great options for you.

Other good options:
Kershaw junkyard dog or rake composite
Spyderco Manix2 or Manix2 XL
Spyderco para2 or military (if tip strength isn't that important)
ZT 350
Benchmade grip or mini onslaught
Benchmade bone collector axis folder.

Benchmade 275 Adamas is a beast of a knife and one of the best values going at the moment.
