I've become interested in khukris lately, and would like to purchase one from HI. I'm basically clueless when it comes to khukris, and am not sure what to get.

I'd like a khukri that is around 15 - 18 inches. I'm not sure if the rivited handles are really that much better than the regular ones. I want something strong, but I don't want a thick, heavy chopper either. I plan to use the blade for light utility work and martial arts practice. Right now I'm considering the WWII, Ang Khola or British Servie.

Any ideas on what I should get as my first Khukri?

Electric, welcome to the Cantina! This question has been asked a few dozen times before, and everyone has an opinion, but it wouldn't hurt to do some searching, see some pics and read some opinions.

Personally for the tasks you describe I would probably go with something that is strong enough to do a good amount of work but also light enough to use for your martial arts. I don't think I would personally pick the ones you did, at least for the martial arts aspects, but would probably go with an 18" Chitlangi, or perhaps Chainpuri.

They are stronger than a Kobra for MA work, the chit has beautiful fullers, and yet it would be heavy enough for a lot of work.

Other than that a good choice would be a standard 17" 24 oz. Foxes Folly, sometimes called the FF fighter. I think that would fill the bill pretty nicely, although the consensus seems to be for heavy work it could have been just a tad (3-4 oz.) heavier. It is an excellent design and good knife however, and could easily do light work and still be a fearsome MA blade.

I think those fit the bill pretty well for what you want. An 18" sirupate would be a good choice, but it doesn't look quite as racy as the others, as it has no fullers, at least IMO.

Finally, the M43 was designed to do just about all you are asking for, and looks great besides. Do a search to see some pics. Look for all threads by Bwray and you'll see a thread he just posted with pics of his Bura M43. You may really like the looks of that model!

The ones you listed are excellent choppers, but these others might work better for your described combination use, although I have to say the 15" BAS is a great first choice for an all-round knife. I just don't think of the WWII and AK as MA models.

BTW, the chiruwa riveted handles as found on the Chiruwa AK, M43 and others, are super strong, but will transmit just a bit more to your hand, and some people don't care for that.

Finally, you can contact Yangdu as to a particular model and buy direct, pay a bit more and choose from the web site, or look for the great daily deals here that happen most weekdays and try to snag one of those. In any case, emailing Yangdu directly at Himimp@aol.com will get you all the info you need.

Good luck and let us know what you come up with please!

Regards,

Norm

Welcome to the Cantina bro....you are a Heel's fan arent you??

Calling yourself a zombie might not have been the best of choices, cause we take zombie stuff VERY seriously round here!

I dont think you could go wrong with any of your choices....But Svashtar pretty much hit it on the head as far as khuk's for MA...

The BAS is most likely the next Khuk on my list...err after I get a deer antler handled Kumar Karda..;)

Welcome aboard EZ. For the uses and characteristics you specify, I would go with either the 16.5" WWII or the 18" Sirupati. Both weigh about 24 oz, have standard handles and lie within your length specifications. The WWII, at 16.5", is right in the middle of the 15" TO 18" range you prefer, so it might be a good middle of the road choice for you. The 18" Sirupati is at the upper limit of your length range and slightly lighter, so it would best serve the MA portion of your interests while still retaining enough chopping power for the light utility work you have in mind.

You realize of course, nobody buys just one. Enjoy.:)

I'd get a short Sirupate, a 16.5" WWll, or a BAS.

Welcome electric Zombie.

Welcome, EZ. I started with a 15" BAS by Bura, bought at retail before I learned of the forum. Since I have bought 4 other khuks, 2 of which went as gifts. I would think a BAS, M43, or WWII would be a great start, and let the fever take over from there.

EZ, welcome aboard.

15" AK, but I'm not a MA. Mine's pointy and I think of it as a pistol substitute.
Good general use, anyways. I'm not in the "WWII khuk cult". Heresy, but still.

You should click on the "extraterrestrial kami symbols pic" in my sig line, you of all people would appreciate them.

For a light khuk, I very much like my chainpuri. I'd recommend one highly. the only sirupati that I have is 30" long, so its heavy, but thats a highly touted "martial" khuk.
I personally don't like my BAS, although I can't pinpoint why. The ghurkas can't be wrong though. I think its just dull and I am too lazy to fix it up:o

I haven't tried the other two on your list, but I'm not sure if an Ang Khola would be my choice for a martial arts blade. I suspect a sirupati, chitlangi, or chainpuri would be more the sort of thing you're looking for - but I've never held those ones myself.

The 17" Foxys Folly is a nice blend of power and speed. It would make a great blade to fit your intended purposes. Mine is a fast and powerful blade. It chops better than one would suspect at 24oz. It is a sweet blade and an incredible place to start collecting khuks. Here is a shot of mine.

Welcome aboard! I hope you have a long, enjoyable stay. I own a 15" BAS by Bura and a 16.5" WWII by Sher. Both are great and you wouldn't be disappointed with either. As for combination light duty worker and MA use, I will gladly defer to the wisdom of the more experienced posts above.

I think the Sirupati is the most under rated khukuri in the stable. An 18" would serve you well. The 18" Chitlangi is a gorgeous piece and would be in the same weight range. The main difference in the two from a handling standpoint would be the larger flared butt of the Chitlangi.

You will be absolutely thrilled with either!

Hi EZ:

My suggestion..................

Put pictures of all the HI kuks on a wall. Put on a blindfold and throw a dart. Buy whatever you hit. You can't lose.

For the use you are describing, I'd suggest an 18" WWII, but there are many khuks that would work just as well. Pick the one that really catches your eye, and you won't go wrong.

These guys have you covered. I just wanted to say Welcome!;) :D

What everyone else said. Personally, i like the 18" WWII for an all 'rounder. Followed by a good ol' 15" AK. I'm no MA, so i can't speak of their function in that regard. However, i wouldn't want to get hit with either. I know both Uncle Bill and Rusty thought a lot of the WWII. The khuks are coming down the lines even more beautiful than they have ever been these days.

Welcome:)

Jake
