with unwritten weapons laws becoming stricter and stricter in nyc,
my friend is wanting to carry a smaller knife,
and i'm looking for the knife for him.

he's currently got a sog flash 2 and he recently got a "oooo, no no no..."
when showing and asking a friend/leo if it were legal.

preferably 2.75" to right under 3" blade length.
he would like a combo edge and tip-up carry.
price range... i guess between $50 and $150 would be ideal.

i'm looking at the al mar hawk and spyderco delica.
(and maybe the al mar nomad for myself..)

you knuts got any advice, suggestions, recommendations?
thanks!

how about something like a Buck Squire, or Buck Prince, they look pretty harmless, and are around $30.

i have a kershaw mojo onion, paid a bit more than 50 on ebay, brand new. Sharp enough, 440A blade, nice quick release. i like it. i always puts the fifth pocket in my levi jean. no one will see it, when you need to use, pull out, slide down blades up, only 2 second job. I am happy with little buddy that has everything I need, legal in NY as well.

By the way, I went down to Paragonspots at 18st second fl tried a few different size of knives and decided with mojo. Just dont' buy it from the store, they 100 for it, at the same time you can get brand new on ebay for near half.

definately hold it, see it before you decide to purchse.

CAUTION:
mojo is so good actually made me now crazy about knives. I start to checkout knives like crazy especially buying those big knives, auto knives that are not legal in NY.

Its a small knife leads to a big addiction. Maybe i am just don't have self control. But i already warn you.

The most sheeple-friendly knife I've got is the Faellkniven U2. No clip, no one-handed opening, no serrations, but small and unobtrusive and an excellent cutter with great edge geometry that holds an edge a long, long time.

I carry it rather than any of my Spydercos when I want a knife that can handle most jobs well and yet doesn't look scary or anything.

This is definitely my favorite folder in this size, the Al Mar Hawk with briarwood scales. I have tried a lot of knives about this size and this is the one for me.

There's also a ZDP Delica due out early next year.
Calypso Jr is a great knife also. If you want to go even smaller you could also look at a Dodo. And I just recently got a cricket and I really like it.

Check out the Benchmade 705 or 707. It is 2.95 inches, built like a tank, and has an excellent lock. Or check out the Benchmade mini-grips, which are 2.99 inches in length and a bit less expensive, but still tough.

I really like that Al Mar... why do they use 440A on $100+ knives, though?

What they use is AUS-8 and quite honestly they do a very good treatment with it. Geometry has a lot to do with it too, and mine stays sharp enough to "tree top" the hairs on my arm even after light regular EDC use. Then when it needs it, all it takes is a light stropping to get back to that fun level that exists beyond razor sharp.

Well okay then. I'll give them a chance next time I see one for a good price... I really gotta say, that was a beautiful folder.

Aloha!

I agree on the Delica...affordable, and if some Non-Knife Educated cop decides to seize it, not too much of a loss. The Al Mar folders are nice also.

God bless
