I'm looking to purchase a do-it-all smart phone. I'm tired of carrying the PDA, cell phone, MP3 player as separate pieces of equipment. I've been a long time Verizon guy and I’ve been looking at the PalmOne Treo 650. I don't really need the extra features in the 700 model. Is this my best option or would you recommend another?

The Treo line of smart phones are best.

Even the Treo 600 works well as a PDA, cell phone, and MP3 player. If that's all you are looking for, you could buy a used 600. That's what I'm using.

On Friday, I helped out a close friend (who had a nasty cold), by strapping her baby on my back, walking her to sleep, and carrying her for a 2.5 hour nap. During that walk, I was able to use my Treo 600 to: 1) take a picture of my friend's baby sleeping; 2) surf the internet, check email, and do some stock trading; 3) call my friend and update her about her baby's nap; 4) jot down some notes for an article I'm working on; 5) play some tunes to help the baby sleep. Then, yesterday, I used the Treo 600 to caculate the times for the high and low tide, and the sunset, to plan some outdoor photography. I also use my phone for sunrises, moon phases, azimuths, addresses and phone numbers, depth of field calculations, storing and reading camera gear instruction manuals in PDF form, listening to audio books, reading text books, playing video games, and as a watch.

The 650 has a number or nice little improvements, such as easily replaceable batteries, a better illuminated keyboard, higher resolution screen, better quality camera, the ability to record videos, the ability to watch movies, the ability to make record audio, etc.

I'm not familiar enough with the 700, but I imagine it has more nice little improvements. I seem to remember it has faster internet.

I have a Sprint PPC6700 running Pocket Windows. When it's working, it's great. It only needs to be rebooted two or three times a week. I talked to a friend the other day who has the Samsung Pocket Windows phone; he says he has to reboot two or three times a day!

If you want reliability, avoid anything running Windows including the Treo 700.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that. Been testing the Treo 700W for the past two weeks as a potential Blackberry replacement, and it's pretty rock solid. I moved to the Treo from a Samsung i730, and been using Pocket PC since it was released as Windows CE. To make it fair, I also carried the Treo 650 for comparison. The one thing not advertised is that Microsoft actually granted Palm permission to re-write the base OS to better fit their platform. So a lot of the glitches (memory allocation issues, hung processess, etc.) aren't cropping up. Granted it's too soon to determine realiability, but it's been the easiest Win Mobile PC device I've come across in a long time. My Dell X50v hasn't been used for quite a while.

Last summer, I switched from carrying a Razr V3 + Sony PDA + Blackberry 7280 to a Treo-650. An amazingly versatile device - as long as you are fairly computer literate and a die-hard gadget freak. Hang around one of the Treo forums (like Treocentral.com) for a while before making a decision. Just don't post any questions without searching first - you'll get roasted. :(

how much pda functionality do you need?

if the use of the keyboad is a major factor disregard this post, but i have an audiovox smt5600 and i love it. it has an expandible mini sd slot up to 1 gb,(drawback-it is under the battery). it has a beautiful screen, and comes with windows media player 10 for your mp3 needs. it has bluetooth capability, long battery life (with regards to smart phones about 4 days with intermittent talking).

pretty much a great do it all phone if your not doing a ton of typing.

just my two cents.
