Help me please: SB Caly vs Sage 2 - What do I buy?

Folks,

Anyone who has read any thread that I have contributed to recently, will likely know that I have absolutely fallen for Superblue steel but when I recently visited the Spyderco HQ.

Whilst there I handled the Sage 2 (thinking that I would prefer the Sage 4 - nope!) and I am on record as saying (repeatedly) that the Caly 3.5 is my go to folder but...

...I just don't know which to buy.

Please help by chiming in with your thoughts, experiences and opinions.

Thanks,

Hello from your neighboring country!

I haven't owned sage2 yet (but I have handled it); and I owned the sb caly3. In my opinion, it is better you get the sb caly3 first! it's getting rare...

as for my exp with the caly3 sb, it is really blows my mind. I am liking the delica4 ffg very much, but caly3 definitely better in matter of ergonomics. it really blends in the hand. no hotspots, no sharp corners... and the G10 color (gray) really do match with the superblue. superblue patina'd and the scales also got 'patina'd' - blue-ish from my denim. The Caly3 in SB is a really superb knife for EDC, and is on my rotation.

and ... you can always get the sage2 later :p

For me it's an easy decision......Super Blue Caly, although I prefer the 3.5 version.

I have both, and love both. But objectively they are very similar in terms of size, feel, blade profile and length, etc. The steels are different obviously, but both are tasty. It really boils down to your subjective preference. Since the Super Blue is a Sprint run, they either are or will be more difficult to obtain in the future, whereas the Sage 2 is a regular production model. That might push you toward the Super Blue Caly, you know? You could always get the Sage 2 later, assuming production continues. Rock on.

Haha!! I have (hopefully) found a place out here in Asia which has stock of the the SB Caly 3.5's...

...so I just placed an order (for TWO!!) at a ridiculous price but I do know how much I love my Caly 3.5's so please keep your fingers crossed that they a) actually have them in stock and b) will ship to me.

FWIW, I know that I will buy a Sage 2 at some point but I much prefer slightly longer cutting edges.

Thanks folks!

Ben

ARRRGHHH!!! The MF'rs have cancelled my 'order' saying that they won't ship to a neighbouring country. SOOOO frustrating!

I've been on the hunt for a new EDC and intended to buy a Super Blue Caly 3 but could not find one. After a trial and error with a lightning strike blue scales Domino I found the titanium Sage II.

I really love this knife. It fits me perfectly and I know will stand up to lots of abuse and will be easy to maintain.

I think powernoodle in post #5 above makes some valid points. If you can buy a Super Blue Caly go for it but if you have to "settle" for the Sage II, I think you will find it to be no compromise at all.

I'm very excited to pick up my new caly 3.5 superblue. But I'll repeat what others have said...you really can't go wrong here. The sage 2 is one hell of a knife!

Caly 3.5 Superblue. Wish I could find one for a reasonable price. As for the Sage, it's great, but I prefer the Domino to the Sage 2. Not that big of a price difference either if you shop around.

I love the Caly 3.5, but I'd take a new knife over a knife I already own (albeit with different steel) any day.

I wish I could find one full stop.

Thanks for the input guys - still pondering...

Ben

I prefer the caly series to the sage series and the superblue is indeed a sprint run.

That said the sage 2 might be more practical because rust.

Your call. :D

You're correct Surfingringo, I am in Malaysia and the 3.5 is in the Phillipines.

Just ordered a substantially overpriced Caly 3 SB, having heard the comments about the on-going availability of the Sage 2.

Thanks folks (& if anyone wants to sell a Caly 3.5 SB let me know...)

Ben

Too bad...I am flying through KL next month. I often stop there, but not this trip. :(. I would have been happy to bring you one.
