Hi all,

I recently just bought a fixed blade. The construction of the knife is very simple; blade made of O1, nickel-silver bolster and sheep horn handle (tang is showing).

The problem is there seems to be a little gap between the blade and the bolster that enables to trap water inside.

How would I be able to fix this problem ?

Thanks =)

Use a toothpick to apply some Super Glue to the gap. It should wick right in and seal everything up. If you get the glue on the blade just clean up with a Q Tip soaked in acetone.

It is a great idea, but as the result, the gap will still show though.

Any other method ?

If You have some of the horn left, sand some into a powder and mix with epoxy.try to work some into the gap.That's about all I know to help short of taking the scales of and reflatening the area that doesnt fit right.

Auto part stores usually have an A+B epoxy putty that is white/ off white color. I think it's called PC-10 or something like that. Comes in a gray plastic tube. Might work if you have no bone dust to work with.

You would have to keep the heat away from the scales. I personally wouldn't want to try this, but then I've never been very gracefull with sodering. Since the gap is between two pieces of metal I think using metal powder in epoxy or a colored epoxy would be a better idea.

Du-oh, I read you're problem wrong from the beginning, I thought the gap was between to bolster and the scales. Use some JB weld.

You can get JB weld just about anywhere: WalMart, K Mart, auto supply stores, Home Depot, Lowes, et cetera. The quicker you find out about all of the wonders of JB weld, the better off you'll be. It's almost as important as WD-40 ;) and most knifemakers use WD-40 for almost everything, up to and including aftershave. :D
Good luck.

I researched JB weld, and it looks very good. My concern is that the result will be dark (grey), and my bolster is mirror finish.

Since JB weld contains iron particle, would it be possible to polish it into mirror finish ?

Thanks for the great ideas.

JB Weld does not take a polish. It will cure to a light grey. After having to take off a couple bolsters attached with JB Weld (and pinned), I can tell you it works very good for attaching bolsters.
