Hello knife experts! I'm putting together a knife sharpening guide. Can you please help me to rank this list of what I believe are the most popular knife steels in order of how easy they are to sharpen?
Maybe we can assign an 'ease of sharpening index' with 5 being easiest and 1 being hardest? Thanks!

CPMS35N,
CPM S30V,
Elmax,
BG42,
154CM,
ATS-34,

VG10,

AUS-8,
8Cr13MoV,

420J,
AUS-6

Well, this is ambitious. But there are too many factors to easily make this work. We need some Ankerson threads for this, but um too drunk to link them. :)

I am no expert but this looks like fun to poke with a 'yeah-sure' stick.

With decent or good ht... ignoring exceptional ht, which could drastically make sharpening easier.

1. s30v, vg10 & 420J (burr can be gummy in spite of good ht)
2. s35vn, elmax, d2, bg42, 154cm, ats-34, 440c
4. n680
5. AUS-6/8, 8Cr13MoV, 14c28n, 440a, 13C26, 420hc

Are you talking about sharpening only, or reprofiling as there is a difference?

What are you using to sharpen with and how experienced are you?

All of that matters more than what the steel types are.

I'm putting together a pocket knife buyer's guide of sorts and have listed these steels starting with the most "premium" and down to the lower end steels. I know that some steels are harder to sharpen than others so I wanted to point that out in my guide. Think of it being aimed more at knife-newbies who are using a system like the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I want categorize these steels into those which will sharpen easily versus those which will be more difficult.

Sorry if I'm going down a rat hole here...

ps - thanks Bluntcut for taking a shot at this
