Guys, help me out! I use my spyderco mini manix on an everyday basis (ie: cut cardboard, rope, plastic ties..etc) and i've just noticed the tip of the point is broke and there's light chipping on the blade. Is it possible I can fix the chipping of the blade, and also somehow sharpen the tip back??? I love this knife, and was just heartbroken when I saw the damage, so if the experts can chime in and lead me in the right direction to repairing my blade, I would greatly appreciate it. Oh, and I just purchased the spyderco sharpmaker.

From what I know is not enough, post some pictures and some knife makers and real help will be along shortly. Welcome to the Forums

James

The chipping sounds typical of S30V. Is it a new knife? If so, it should go away after a few sharpenings. As far as the broken tip, I say post a picture of it.

It will be difficult, but not impossible to fix the tip. Send it to me and I will resharpen it and fix the tip for the charge of sharpening it.

Let me know if I can help you out.

Tom

James Todd: I've tried taking pics to post, but my camera's not taking the pics clear, it's coming out really blurry. You have to bring it up to the light to see the chip and the broken tip.

Chinese Man: The knife is about two and a half months old of medium to hard usage. I've only sharpened it three times since I've gotten it. Would sharpening it too much would have gotten it too sharp, to a point where it becomes brittle?

Tom Krein: I'm trying to avoid shipping it out for repair, and wanted to see if there's anything I can do to repair it with the spyderco sharpmaker, with guidance from the pros.

From what I know of the sharpmaker it takes a bit of time to remove metal with it.

You might want to look into getting a diamond hone to repoint it and to remove enough metal to repair the chips.

That is a very nice offer by Tom K!

Well, if you have to hold it up to the light to see the damage, I would say, just resharpen it on the Sharpmaker and the chip should sharpen right out. If they are too large for that, you know you have a complementary sharpening service from Spyderco. They will fix it for the nominal charge of $5.

HoB: Will sharpening the knife too much make the blade too brittle? I'm kinda suspecting i've maybe sharpened it too much, and that's the reason why it chipped. When i sharpen the knife, I use the spyderco recommended 40 degree angle.

If you have only sharpened it three times there is no need to worry about making it brittle. In fact sharpening wont make it brittle, i dont think.

I had to sharpen a paramilitary six times before microchipping during honing went away, and the S30V would chip when cutting cardboard.

How were you sharpening before you got the sharpmaker (you just got it?). If anything, with a flat ground knife like the Manix, you make the edge thicker and more resistant to damage as you sharpen and move the edge deeper into the primary grind. But you've only done that three times, that's not even something to think about yet.
