I have worked on my first knife quite a bit. Is convex ground in 1/8" 1084. I found a local forger who said he would help me HT it. Only problem is he just does some wrought iron stuff and uses water to quench. So I have to bring some quench oil with for my blade. (I'm thinking canola or peanut. That will work well, right?)

So my questions are - how much oil do I need? And do you have a good way to save and transport it? I am sure I will be going to see him again for more 1084 HT. this knife making is fun!

canola oil, and for one knife I think a gallon is fine, you need a metal container and bring a funnel to recycle oil back to container once its cooled down.....

shoot to quench around 130 or so.... he can heat the oil with an old piece of steel off the forge..

use a candy thermometer, you can pick up cheap ones at WM..

no need to swirl blade around oil just dunk it in there for around a minute, let air cool and you're good to go...

it is fun !!! just done my first 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
