Help me understand the lanyard..

I can see the utility of a loop to allow that blade to hang from your wrist while using that hand/fingers briefly for another purpose. Any other use? - I'm all ears...Cheers.

I always thought that the lanyard is meant to aid in pulling the knife out of your pocket (clipped).

I agree with MRaymond. With CRKs the lanyard is there to make it easier to retrieve your knife from your pocket. I am not a lanyard person, but have them on my CRKs now.

It's there to draw to the attention of others that you have something clipped on to your person, in case they didn't already notice. It also keeps the lanyard bead industry alive and thriving. ;) I prefer not to use a lanyard as all my knives are clipped to my back pocket (next to my wallet). Others swear by them. Different strokes...

Back pocket. Hmm. I guess there is little risk of bending the titanium plates of the handle by partially sitting on the knife when clipped in a back pocket, ya? Even on a 21 small?

I always thought it was there so you could unravel it and use it as a dummy cord while working over water/high up.
It also aids in pulling the knife out of the CRK calfskin pouches.

It extends the grip on the handle by giving your last couple of fingers something to grip/grab against.

I dont use tge pocket clip so I keep it inside the supplied leather pouch, it makes it much easier to retrieve the knife.

also, ive dropped my small sebenza in an ivy patch, and the lanyard was sticking out making it easy to spot.

not sure if that was an intention or luck.

personally I like the lanyard so I ordered a nicer one from chris reeve (burgundy bronze bead).

The Chris Reeve knot, like the hangman knot, can be loosened & tightened by sliding the barrel of the knot while holding the proper distal bitter end of the lanyard. This process can have utility value.

Just for looks imo. Any circumstantial benefit is just luck, again, in my opinion. I could see it making it easier to pull from a sheath though.

I didn't like it on my 25 as I like the look of the cool standoff. I do like it on a 21 or Classic though.

It helps too remove it from the belt-sheath.
With the small Sebenza it gives more grip (as T.E. stated above).
The red lanyard on my large micarta Sebie gives a fresh touch to the knife.
