I guess it's an age old question..........when you put the 2 Outdoorsman (expensive and lite) side by side....and you do a hard comparison on the 2 knives separated by $150......aside from the leather sheath...is the San Mai 111/VG-1 of such additional value to warrant the pricing or are there are things in the build that I am overlooking. In other words, is it the edge is sharper than the lite, edge retention is largely extended after use....or some other build character that I would be paying for.

ps....I own the lite.....very nice for the price...but I would like to know what I am missing...

The Sanmai III Outdoorsman is, I believe, one of the few knives that Cold Steel has made by Hattori of Seki.
Which means that you are paying for top quality fit & finsh. See this thread to see what I mean.

The SM3 Outdoorsman is a knife you could probably pass down, and will retain resale value.

I have a lite somewhere around here, it is made in Taiwan with Krupp 4116, which while adequate is nothing
special. I've had CS 4116 chip on me so I don't regard it very highly.

Basically what I'm saying is that while they are both "outdoorsmen" and you can use either the
same way, they are in a separate class as knives.
