Hey everyone,

I just received my first waterstone. A king brand combo with 1000 and 6000 grit. I have a coupla questions. How long do I soak the stone before I use it? Also, do I always leave it submersed in water? Or do I store it dry? Thanks in advance.

Soak = 10 minutes. Keep nice and wet while using.
Store = you can leave it in water, or let it dry. I let them dry.

Enjoy...

The 1000 side may benefit from soaking, the 6000 side probably won't. I don't leave mine in water. You commonly hear that people only store coarser grits (coarser than the 1000) in water.

10 min is the general recommendation, but 1000/6000 combination is so fine that 3-5 min are enough in my experience. The way you tell is quite easy, you should always sharpen with some water on the surface. If you wet the surface and the water soaks into the surface leaving the surface pretty much dry, it needs to be soaked longer.

I used to store them wet, but now I let them dry. Wet storage makes it rather likely that they will grow some mold which is not damaging but really annoying. Try to use filtered water if your tap water is very hard. This way the build up upon drying is negiable.
