No Viagra jokes, please.

Have one of these beauties coming from the Skunkster.

I think I'm going to order another of Dwayne's scabbards and try to bone it out the same way Vicki has boned Scott's SMOG sheath.

I just need some directions as to tools in technique. Found a variety of boning tools on the web. No idea as to best size and/or shape.

Also, I already own this GW and sheath...

This sheath has already been treated with Sno-Seal. Does that mean it's too late for boning?

I may be wrong but I believe "boning" is done by simply rubbing the leather until it attains a nice sheen. I believe that the sheath you show in your thread could be "boned" by rubbing it a little more. I have boned boots and sheaths to help with protection from water using snoseal. All I did was rub them more than usual. Hmmm, that whole paragraph just sounds wrong.

I thought you had to wet it, shape it, and then let it dry. Skunk mentioned water. Progunner mentioned rubbing alcohol. Is it as simple as that, or are there any tricks of the boning trade, so to speak? That last question just sounds wrong.

KAAK, I know. There's no way around it. I just need to know how to bone. I figured there were a bunch of boners here, so I asked my boning questions.

BTW, you should reply behind Ren in every thread for about a week. Let him think the clowns are following him.....

I've never had to bone a sheath.

But if things went well in the 'ganza...

And my wife sees my credit card bill...

Skunk is fishing for the next week, but he could probably post a boning tutorial when he gets back if you ask nicely...

You wet the leather and use a tool to mold the leather to the basic shape of the knife handle. It will get a sheen and darken as you work it and when you treat it with sno seal or what ever you choose those areas will most probably appear darkened again, as they will lighten a bit when the sheath dries completely. Be careful not to drench the leather. Use a cotton ball and go gradually. You may want to go to here Knife Network Sheath Making Forum and do a search on "casing" which is what the technical term is for prepping the leather with moisture so you can bone or tool it. (You will have to register as a user to get into the forum most likely.)

As for your sheath that has been sealed, I would say it is too late for sure. That Sno Seal is not going to allow you to properly case the leather.

Thanks for the link and tips. That's what I thought about the current sheath. That's why I was going to order another from Scott.

Thought about just asking Vicki if she'd simply charge me a fee to case (*thank God* there is another word) it. But it should be fun to try a new skill.

Casing it is just getting it wet, you still have to select a tool and bone it. (Don't you feel like a kid in sex ed class again? Oh well, I didn't make the terms up, I just have to use them).

That settles it then. I couldn't very well solicit Vicki to case and bone my sheath. I'd never get another piece of INFI from BCS.

I'll just have to bone it myself.

What about dyes? I had a hair-brained idea about dying the leather red to match (sort of) the red G-10.

BTW, that red G-10 GW is going in the woods with me this fall. Just something about it....

One of these days I am going to try my vacuum sealer to see how it works, if I prep the leather right and it isn't too thick it ought to work alright. :D

I have one of the "factory seconds" sitting in my shop, I'll dunk it and get some step by step pics. I'll see if I have some of those "home boners" that skunk was talking about. :o Anything smooth should work, plastic kife handles, pen caps, certain wooden spoons (if they're smooth enough) some massage tools work well too.

I'll try to get my boners :o together tomorrow and see what happens.

I actually have a real bone boning tool made by Dan Koster around here somewhere, now that is a nifty little boner! uh:D
