I'm thinking about getting a machete, my environment is eastern woodlands, and I want something really just to throw on my bug out bag, throw in my car kit, or chop up stuff in my backyard . My choices are

1. Kabar cutlass- Like the blade shape and thickness

2 woodman's pal- It's built like 10 miles from my house, and it looks like it will work well in cold weather

3 Ontario 18 inch- looks good for the price

Weight isn't an option

Thanks for the responses

I like the Condor golok. It's thicker blade is better for processing firewood and limbing trees. If I were dealing more with lush, green vegetation, then I'd want a regular machete.

I would also recommend looking at the Condor Golok. I think you'd like it for the use you would give it give it.

The Golok would do well in cold climates. For something designed for the North American temperate zones, there's also this fellow I designed. Condor MAY be picking it up for 2013. I hope I hope!

The brass pins have been replaced with hand peened brass rivets for extra security. A production version would have a poly handle and 2mm thickness rather than 1/8" (3mm) :)

42BLades, hope your design gets picked up. Quite an interesting take on a woodman's tool. BTW how do you call your design?

It's called the Baryonyx, but it's not named after the shop--rather it's the other way around! The name means "Heavy Claw" and comes from Baryonyx Walkeri, the dinosaur whose claw is my logo. It was essentially the prehistoric equivalent of a grizzly bear!

I used it this morning to chop a big slice off of a round bale of hay for the horses--I'll use my vintage Lightning Hay Knife once it gets here, but until then the Baryonyx works ok. I designed it to handle a little bit of everything, and I keep surprising myself with how broad "everything" ends up being! :p

Bad news is, I accidentally chopped through and hit the concrete floor of the barn with the point. Good news is the edge just rolled and was immediately revived by a couple of quick passes on a 15 micron belt. :o:thumbup:

I would go with the local product, and get the Woodmans pal

That'd be my recommendation. If there's a local company that makes a good product, I'll almost always go to them. In my case, that means there's lots of local beer and cheese....

Thanks for all the advice however my mom put her foot down

"There will be no machetes in this house." and that will be how it goes until I can order my
own, maybe I'll hold of for the production Baryonyx comes out.

IF it comes out! It's only being considered. I can hope though! If you'd like to see it make it to production, send Condor and email and let them know! I spent a year and a half designing it and a year bringing the prototypes to life, so I'll be damned if I don't try my hardest to see this through! :p:thumbup:
