I want to reduce the width of my OKC Ranger RD4's Micarta scales by about a 1/16th of an inch. Is it possible to do so with an industrial sander or grinder and then finish with some sandpaper or would this somehow ruin the Micarta?

No problem, just go a little at a time until it feels good in your hand.
Here is a RD7 and RD9 I did a little work on.

Go slow so you don't overheat the surface of the material.
I've read that you don't want to breathe the dust so get a respirator or whatever.

I've worked with micarta for over 20years.If you use new abrasives it helps alot. Worn belts tend to burn it.Suggest a 120 grit to take it down. Then you can hand sand. a 220 grit will still leave a grabby feel to it.I've been using filter masks and they've worked well so far.
