I have a buck 889 and it is sex on a stick except for one problem. every time i stick my hand in my pocket it sands the back of my hand. I'm serious this thing could either grate cheese or be used to file down a grade 8 bolt. I'm thinking of just takeing a flat file and knocking the points off a little. is there a problem with this or is it okay. I can't see where it would cause a problem unless I had a seizure and filed too far. by the way this is the space age polymer not the g10. any help would be appeciated. thanks, ahgar

I cant tell from the pics but it looks like you might be able to remove the scales without taking the whole knife apart , if so I would get some 600 odd grit and smooth those up a bit , if your gentle enough you shouldnt make any deep scratches , noticable anyway.
I did this with my CRKT that was the same way , worked like a charm.

The scales on the 889 are riveted I believe. Just get some 3oo grit wet or dry paper and work your way around the edges , worked on mine , and doing it by hand you really can't mess up. Later, Steve

They are abrasive as hell from the factory. There are many posts around the knife forums of guys sanding them down. I know service men that have bought them and been told they were out of uniform from what those knives did to their pockets on the flight lines. It is something Buck should fix in my opinion. Grippy is one thing but selling sandpaper scales is entirely uncalled for. I sanded my own down as well. Took all of ten minutes. Why Buck can't do that before it leaves the factory is beyond me.

thanks for the info just call me sandpaper boy. I didn't think there was a problem but just wanted to check. later, ahgar

thanks for the link i appreciate it. it's always nice to see what it's going to look like before you do it. thanks again, ahgar

okay I did it, just me, my knife, and some sandpaper, and a radio, i now have about the perfect tactical knife. it's even sterile, which means i wasn't watching and sanded off the buck on the scales. made it a lot more comfortable to carry. now the skin can grow back on my hand, thanks guys, ahgar

I was considering getting the 889 and am glad to see this thread. By 'scales' are you referring to the 'texture' on the TACCOM handle itself?

That can double-up as a file? :D haha... not a good thing from the factory.

Scales are the slabs of material that fasten to the liners that make up the handle. A Buck 110 for example has wooden scales inset into brass liners/bolsters.

In this case, the 889 scales are made from glass-reinforced nylon (called TACCOM by Buck). The issue with these scales is the checked surfaces pattern they have, which is indeed very sharp out of the box. Great for grip, bad for pockets, easily fixed if it really bugs you.

Thanks Blue Sky, I think I get it. I read about the sandpapering and stuff, I guess it can be fixed but for a knife newbie, it'd be nice to get something that's perfect out of the box. Still, the 889 is a top contender for my first knife (well, not considering my Buck 119 that I bought when I was 10 that got confiscated by my Mum :D)
