Hey all,

I'm very new to Busse, so please bear with me on my questions!

I've done some research, changed what I originally thought, and now I'm going to ask you all - the end users - for some suggestions.

Here's the plan:

Right now I carry a few knives on my field gear, usually the following:

1. Emerson Commander
2. Gerber multi-tool
3. Simonich Midtech Raven Combat

So I'm looking at my field gear (I just got off 6 years of USAF Active Duty, going into the Reserves) and wondering how I can make it more comfortable, user-friendly, and shave some weight.

Don't get me wrong, I *love* my Simonich Mid Tech, but there's always that nagging thought in the back of my head that I might lose it during a field exercise. Also - and more importantly - it's a fairly big blade, one that can be difficult to conceal when we have our "Gear Nazi's" out and about (gotta love PC).

So my thought was, to shave space, weight, and add a bit of concealment, I figured I'd go with a smaller blade from another reputable company. I happend upon Mr. Busse's web site, and saw the Active Duty.

I thought: Cool! A smaller blade fitted more towards utility, and has a nice elegance to it. Even did some searches here, and sent an email to the company store to see if there were any hidden in a closet somewhere. The satin/black paper micarta looks awsome!

Damned if I didn't realize that the blade is only 2.5 inches (according to zvis.com). Well, that kinda shoots my idea in the butt. I was looking for something around 3.5-4 inches....small enough to be concealed in an ammo pouch on my tac vest (or close enough), but large enough for damn near anything I can throw at it.

So back to the drawing board again. More searching on zvis.com.

I happen upon the Badger Attack. Looks more like a slightly longer AD. GREAT!

NOT! It's my understanding that they're not made anymore. Damn!

So now, the question: What the hell am I looking for???!!

I'm open to any & all suggestions. Pics would be a definate help.

Thanks
Phil

PS Looking at the Company Store site, do you guys think the Leaner Meaner Street or the Model T Street would work?

As always, open to any & all suggestions.

Thanks
Phil

HELLO AND WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLCOME!!!

I would say GO FOR THE BADGER!!! They pop up often enough on the exchange here and are sweet knives all around. You could even try posting in the knives wanted to buy section and hope one of the hogs takes his hooves off one ;)

It will serve you well and remember... "What ever broke your busse, killed you five minutes earlier"

If you get any other questions, we are always glad to help out. But I'd say watch the exchange, especially with Blade Show coming up.

Again, Welcome and feel free to stick around for a while.... or forever

KAAK

Edit: Just noticed you edit :D... I have seen a buddies meaner street and it was nice. But personally, I would go with the BA. Seems like more knife to me. Just my opinion :)

This pic should give you an idea of the various badgers... (Not mine, so if the hog isn't cool, I'll remove it)

WOW!

Can anyone break down the different models for me?

Some look like they have a wider blade, some look skinnier, some look like custom jobs...

This is like learning how to swim by being tossed out of a boat in the middle of the ocean...

Addict,

MUCH MUCH better bro. I appreciate the help. Now to start with the research LOL.

By all means, keep the suggestions comming folks!

PS what's the blade length on the Badger? Is it 4in or 5in?

Phil, if you don't want to go through the expense and time trying to get one of the Hogs to come up off of a Badger, no matter which generation, I would definitely recommend any of the Meaner Streets, Leaner Meaner Streets or Model T. I have been carrying a Meaner around for several weeks now and it is pretty concealable. A bit more blade than the AD, I actually have retired my AD user for a little while. I think the big plus is that you can get the MrS, LrMrS or ModT for current retail and not a elevated secondary market collector price. That is not to say you won't find one of use who will cut you a good deal for an older badger based on your military service. It probably won't be retail price, but it might be a bit under current trading prices, but that is just some food for though.

You didn't go to Western IL University did you? I had buddy over there that was a USAF SP at one itme. Thought maybe you were he and went back in.

The BA's blade length is about 4 1/2" from the tip to the micarta. The cutting edge is about 4".

The DABA mentioned above for $225 with the sheath is a good deal.

If you're looking for somewhat inexpensive,
take a look at the Model T Mean street,
now available at the company store.
Warning: They might not last long.
.
BTW, the active duty that I just measure has a 3" cutting edge.
If you really like have a wide blade, pick up a badger.

Progunner,

Not me bro. Never went to college. 6 years AD with the AF, joined when I was 18.

Everyone else:

Any other suggestions? Will the AD fill the role I'm looking for? Is there anything between the AD and the BA?

I don't really like comparing the blades of one company to another (especially on their forums), but maybe you guys would understand what I'm looking at if I did.

I'm looking for something similiar in size to Strider's DB or MFS.

I just need something small enough to be concealed, yet long & robust enough to do light field work (and self-defense concealed back up for civilian LE). Very light chopping/cutting chores. Anything bigger will be handled by either my ATC tomahawk, or my military issued machete.

Good to see another former SP in here. I did four at Malmstrom, three in Ramstein, and one in Riyadh. I had some good buddies at Scott AFB. Good luck in your search for a Busse. All the knives the Hogs mentioned above are good picks, but my personal opinion would be to go with the Model T. Great price.

Welcome to the trough! I would concur on the above suggestions. I have held a BA-E and it is as much knife as you are ever going to find for its size IMO. There is one over at the exchange <<<Here>>>. It may be even more heft than you need but I am partial to overkill ;)

I have picked up two Meaner Streets from the Company Store (I missed my chance to sign for the second one at the post office today actually :( ) and it is an amazing little knife. VERY stout 4".

that's a good deal without the sheath.
