So, I ordered this Model 12 "Raymond Thorp Bowie" a couple of years ago, and it'll be delivered summer 2007, but I thought that I'd consider some of the design options that would give it better balance and feel. I expect the knife to be something handed down.

At present, the order specs are:

- 13" O1 steel blade
- brass lugged hilt
- scalloped (vs smooth) brass collar
- brass/black spacers
- commando-shaped ironwood handle
- flanged scalloped (vs rounded) brass butt cap
- blade etching: "name here"
- wax impregnated leather sheath

Thanks for your thoughts!

Milcaztra,

Randall does a great job with the balance of this knife, but since it is so big, 13" blade, you will probably never use it.

You mention, "something handed down", so I would recommend changing the handle to ivory and having Rick Bowles scrim the handle. This knife would be something that would grow greatly in value, over the years. Yes, it would cost a lot more initially.

Best regards,

Rhett Stidham

That's an interesting suggestion. How much would ivory cost, and where would I find an appropriate specimen that would match the blade? Does Rick Bowles do both scrimshaw and engraving? I need to do a search for pictures of his work.

Also, what do you think about smooth vs scallops on the collar and butt cap. Smooth might be better if etchings and/or scrimshaw are added to the mix. I'm not sure how much expense will rise with these considerations though. Thanks for the advice!

milcaztra.

Smooth on the fittings for engraving. A major portion of the Randall knife engraving is now done by Ron Scaggs. Ivory mostly from Gene Beal. The only choice for scrim is Rick Bowles for the best chance for your knife's value to grow. There are other very excellent scrim artists but Bowels is the only choice for Randalls as that is what Randall collectors are looking for.
