I got a keyless chuck with a MT3 taper.

As you can see in this pic, this is what the arbor on the press looks like. A J33 taper for the old chuck and a threaded upper part. The rest of the shaft in not tapered since the threads old it up.

So is there a way to make this work? I mean short of buying a new press. :(

You really need a chuck with the correct taper...

I've never seen one with a taper, and the thread like that.

If it's a J33 taper on the spindle, you should be able to use a chuck with a J33 and no thread.

It does look a bit odd, but most drill presses, even those many decades old, have a Morse Taper - Usually MT2 but also MT3 on a bigger drill press

I've never seen that either.

In the top pic it looks as if you were able to remove that whole shaft with the j33 taper and threaded portion.
How did you do that ?

What I am wondering Brian is, the arbor must still tapered for it to hold in the drill. But it is not a MT2 taper for sure. It doesn't 'look' tapered. I even thought about making a new arbor myself but I am sure I am overestimating my abilities there. :(

Thanks for your help

With a hammer. :( But it is a copper hammer. Hence my thinking that it is tapered. I need to take it apart again to measure. Just seems like a real shallow taper.

The end of your shaft is not tapered?
It looks tapered from here, but it's a long way from Ca to AZ...

I'm talking about the part the chuck mounts to, not the part that goes in the quill.

A J33 taper is only about 1.5mm different from one end to the other, over a length of about 25mm

Sorry Brian, I wasn't clear, as always. :(
I know what you meant about the J33 taper. I was talking about the long shaft after the treaded part that goes in the quill. Must be tapered.

PS: I am not in AZ but probably even farther away. ;)

Pretty sure you will need a new chuck Patrice.

I don't know what taper is in the new chuck, but it is clearly larger than the old one.

Providing the taper on your spindle is indeed J33, you need a chuck with a J33 hole, and should be able to ignore the thread.

Thanks Brian. I'll give the company a call to see if they have it. Getting metal working stuff is sometimes hard in this part of the world.
