hi
i am looking for a big fixed blade with a price tag of up to 300 usd (give or take).
i was looking at chris reeve green beret and pacific and knife research legion.
i would like whay you think about this knives and if you think i can find a better knife for the money.

for know i have an ontario fighter sp-6 and i ordered an esee 5.

as for the big question- what do i need the knife for? well, i just fill it is time to get a big good knife. i am not even sure i will ever use it, but i want to know that if i do use it- it will not fail on me.

thanks

pretty positive you can't go wrong with the yarborough (green beret knife) it's very well thought out and built tough... there are a lot of options out there though, and if you aren't even sure you are ever going to use it, you can get quite a few that fit that bill ...not many with the green beret stamp of approval though.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good lineup.

You didn't really answer the question of what you need it for though. Is this going to be a camp knife? A general pry-stuff open and beat things with knife? A fighter? A fighter that you buy because you think it's cool but really it sits on the shelf most of the time because you can't use it as a civilian? A bug-out bag knife?

There are a lot of good options. Beckers are rugged as heck, dirt cheap, and fun to customize. A good khukuri is a good knife. It's definitely hard to go wrong with a CRK, like the ones you've mentioned. You could also look at custom blades. I have a Dawson fighter that I love.

Honestly, if you're not sure you'd use it, I'd go with something a little less expensive (BK9, perhaps). Shame to spend a bunch of money on a shelf knife, but you'll still get something that will be rugged and dependable. The ESEE blades are good options as well.

How BIG is a big knife though? Are we talking 5 inches? 11 inches? What?

I would go towards a real chopper/machete with 9" or longer blade and a tomahawk if you already have the SP-6 and an ESEE 5 on the way. You can get a nearly indestructible 12" machete and tomahawk for under $100.

thanks for the reply's

crimsonfalcon07 - a big knife for now would be around 6-7 inch.

OrdnanceBubbaUSMC - i do have a few machete's i got traveling. i forgot to say i don't live in the us so my sister will have to get it for me, icould't really ask her to get me anything bigger than a 7 inch knife.
if i deside to use the knife it will most likely be a camp knife.

rustyrazor-i know the green beret is considered to be a good knife, but i have seen the destruction test on you-tube they did with the green beret and that's what got me thinking again, even when the chances of me doing that kind of things to the knife are close to nothing.

Hello. I would go with a Scrapyard Dogfather, or even better, a Swamp Rat Rdent 9 (around $200 USD). Actually, in my opinion, get the Swamp Rat... You can't go wrong... here's the specs;

Name: Rodent 9
Blade Length: 9 1/2"
OAL: 15 1/4"
Steel: SR-101
Hardness: 58-60 RC
Thickness: 1/4"
Handles: Black Canvas Micarta
Blade Width: 1 5/8"
Grind: Ultra Convex Saber Bevel

Starting at: $198.95

For the price, you just can't beat it

I would suggest the esee6 or since you already have the 5 get the junglas its a amazing chopper and alot of fun. The cr green beret is a great knife and I have used mine alot so you couldn't go wrong with it either. The swamprat rodent 9 is going to be a winner too so would the busse boss jack. The beckers are great too, the bk7 would be a good bigger knife than the esee5 or go big for the bk9 also a fun one.

hard to go wrong with any of the knives listed so far.

I'd hit up the exchange and look for a good used scrapyard I'm pretty fond of the Regulator myself also I feel Becker knives are a pretty good value for the money and if I were you I'd check out the BK7.

If you're looking for a good, large "Camp" knife, I would not go with the ESEE 6 simply because it's too light (around 12oz.), which lighter than the ESEE 5... and the Junglas 3/16" thick, so it will chop OK, but you'll come up short when it comes to splitting, and to get something as light as an ESEE 6 would defeat the purpose. I'm still sticking to the Rodent 9; it's 1/4 inch thick, which means it'll split like a damn maul ;) which ALSO means it will chop temendously well, and is covered by one of the best warranties in the business. The CRK Green Baret would be nice, but you kind of paying for the name. And it also lacks in some heavily needed power (also, the tang sticks out from the handle, so I expect that it will create hot-spots, and be quite painful on you palm, and fingers. One more thing, the spine is squared off, making it more dificult to split with, and is useless for striking a firesteel, which also, again, takes away from the weight of the blade, hindering its chopping capabilities).
Just some things to consider when choosing a good Camp Knife. --Rodent 9--

Junglas, BK9, Kabar Cutlass, Heavy Bowie, or Grass Machete. All big, fairly inexpensive (my favorite part), and rugged as all get out.

The choice is yours, mon ami, I'm sure you will do well with whatever you choose.

+1 i heard a lot of good things about these. i have both a scrapyard and a swaprat, i can give a comparison since all of the cutting task i face r handled by my delica.

I'm in the same position as you, I decided I needed a solid, big, belt knife. So I just order a Blackjack M14 from KSF.
