Spark...don't move this yet please! Because of the number of eyes that see this I posted here....

In 1986 or '87, Backpacker or Outside magazine did an article on "survivors". Nick Rowe, a P.O.W., Army colonel and founder of the SERE program was the feaured subject. In the article, among other tidbits, was his view on "survival knives". I called his office and was told that he carried the Al Mar "SERE" folder. I called to Bragg? to speak with him but never got through. Anyway, the magazine had an inset with "Colonel Rowe's Survival Kit". It was a three "layered " system. I kept the article, without making copies. I had it for 14 years until my wife @#$%$#@$ threw it out! I can tell you, I searched everywhere for it...no luck. I wanted to reproduce it for the good people here and the Wilderness forum. Can anyone help? please?

BTW, read Five Years To Freedom...his recounting of capture, torture and escape. It is an amazing documentary of human will at its best.

ps I even contacted the magazines and libraries with no luck

Hi Geoff
I saved that article also and I believe I can still find it. Drop me a private email and tell me if you still need it. If you do I will try to dig it out and get a copy to you. Akraven

..if you can indeed dig up said article, and mail me a copy too, I'd be willing to put up $10 to offset the printing/mailing/time costs associated with locating and reprinting it.

Just make other copies, I'm sure there's more than just three of us that would like to have a copy for the 'files'... ;)

Thanks in advance,

Mel

There is a good friend in Texas who is a former Ranger-SF who is an editor in Floresville.
He not only knew Rowe he actually went through the course and wrote about.
And yes Rowe promoted the Al Mar SERE folding pocket knife, my friend still has his and I have tried for 15 years to get the damn thing>
ARRRRRRR!
If it is advisable and your searches are fruitless perhaps I can convince my friend to publish his article here on Bladeforums.

Geoff: I've been searching for that same magazine! I read that article and eventually attended SERE school, went overseas to 10th SF Group then came back to SERE as a senior instructor. Got to be friends with Dan Pitzer, the SF medic held along with Rowe. Of course I've read "Five years to freedom" several times.

The magazine in question has a leggy blond in a one-piece swimsuit running through surf, from left to right, looking at the camera. I know because I found my copy while cleaning out my parents' house in 2006. Then I lost it again!

Akraven I'lll be contact you at your email re: a copy of the article, if you have it.

I found my "level 3 kit" in the basement the other day, it fits in an 8 by 8inch tupperware box. I also own at least three of the SERE knives, two folders and a fixed blade that I absolutely love.

Crap! I hadn't read the dates on the above posts, but I am definitely looking for the exact same article as Geoff in Philly re: Col. Nick Rowe and SERE school, in Outside magazine in '86 or 87.

Sorry for reviving such a necropost.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. That article definitely influence my military career.

You should know that Nick Rowe was assassinated in the Philippines on April 21, 1989, by Fililpino terrorists of the New People's Army. His bio "Five Years to Freedom" is absolutely outstanding and a testament to personal courage, faith, and patriotism. He was one tough guy.

Outside. October 1986. Found my copy. Local university library also has it.

Sorry for the necro-post!
