if you were going to buy your first CRK sebenza (or for some of you, ANOTHER sebenza), which would you choose? regular of classic?

any suggestions are very welcome here. please.

thanks,

** UPDATE: i ended up getting a large regular sebenza from ebay. brand new from factory for $279.00. did not think i could ever beat that price so i picked it up.

thanks to all!

I've gone through the same debate and settled on the Classic. It just has a more pleasing, elegant shape IMO. From what I hear they are equally useful, it's all up to which one you find more attractive.

There is little if any real working difference among the large, small, classic, or regular Sebenzas. They are all elegant and effective cutting tools. It is mostly a matter of individual preference, which no one can decide for you.

I have the large regular and small classic. I also had a small regular, which I would grab indiscriminitely between that and the small classic. Collect them all! And don't forget to get a Mnandi, too! :D

i like the way you think esav :)

i thought it may just be a personal pref., but was not sure. from pics, i can see a small variation in the handle sizes. is this true to life? or is it my eyes deceiving me? looks as if the regular has a larger grip.

anyone willing to do a "pass around" with me for a week or so? i don't have anyone close by that has a sebenza.

thanks again,

first sebbie? I'd try and get a small regular sebenza with a polished blade from the aftermarket.

thanks for the thoughts spyken.

i'm on ebay daily looking :) only used one out there now has a funky custom graphic handle. i'm going for basic Ti at this point.

i think i need to go large too. i'm a big fella, and my normal EDCs are benchmade 941 and spyderco endura.

thanks,

I had both regular and classic small Sebbies. I would instnctively grab the classic when I wanted one of them, so I sold the regular.
Either is a fine choice.

Paul

I have both and have a slight preference for the Classic. The relief for the index finger with the Classic gives me a bit more security in general cutting situations. Either way, you can't go wrong.

I was in the same boat when I bought my first Sebbie and I ended up getting the regular. For me I like the handles on the regular better than the classic, I don't like the big half moon cutout for the thumb stud on the classic, jmho. I don't think you will be dissapointed with either one. :D

ok. large regular will definitely suit you. I have a large regular myself altho I restrict its use to outdoorsy stuff, and not urban carry. there are always a couple for sale at good prices on the for sale forums.

if you're willing to spend for a new one, I believe New Graham has the best price. Go check them out.

I've always liked the profile of the Classic over the regular. The handle feels really good in hand, and the blade tip has a little bit more point to it. For a little bit more you can get a wood inlaid Classic and the thickness of the wood, while not a lot, really improves the grip in my opinion.

Gotta throw a monkey wrench in at this point. For the cost of the wood inlaid model you can get a Rick Hinderer Firetac that is about the closest thing I've found to the sebbie, and it is built a little thicker........especially if you can find a Firetac 165. The 165 a reference to the blade thickness of .165" and handle slabs of .165". Just had to say it Esav!! :) :D

I've owned both and couldn't recommend one over the other. Only difference I noticed is that with a polished blade you notice thumbprints more readily on the classic, as the cutout seems to frame them. :D

It's a little thing, but it really did force me to wipe them down every time.

Hey, you asked! :p

Since you live in the Southeast you probably have the ability to attend gun/knife shows. My strong suggestion would be that you attend a couple and see if you can find a vendor with a Sebbie or two. This would give you an opportunity to examine one in person. I'm a great believer that the choice of a knife is a very personal thing and although you can get excellent advice on BFC there is no substitute for direct tactile contact with a knife you are considering. I know C&E shows have a couple of dealers who always have several Sebbies as well as other CRK knives. Email me if C&E comes near you and I'll tell you which vendors to contact.

i'm trying to wait till next month to make the decision. the '04 knifemakers guild show is in orlando this year (july 30, 31, aug. 1), and i will be going there. i am just "jumping the gun" a bit at this point :)

thanks to all for your input.

I own one Sebbie (a large regular) and love it. However, if I buy another I think it will be a large Classic. Both are equally great knives, however I have since handled Classics and find the handle to be a little bit more comfortable, and find I like the subtle blade shape difference a bit more. But since I don't foresee buying another for some time, I am happy enough with what I have.
Either way you cannot lose, but as mentioned already, if possible, try to check out some Sebenzas and feel them in your hand to see what's best for you.
Jim
