Help needed to sharpen Gerber Guardian

Hi all

So a few months back I ordered a Gerber Guardian. Out of the box it wasn't exactly what I would call sharp so I figured I would get out the trusty spyderco sharpmaker. Well, somehow I just made things worse. It is now so dull that I can't cut anything with it. Yes, I know that even a dull knife can still cut you (a stupid friend taught me that), but in this case I really doubt it. I mean, it's just a little better than a butter knife (at least my butter knives have something like serrations). I read a thread here about the same type of problem but I don't recall a solution being found.

Anyway, I know that it's obviously not meant to be used as an edc, but it would be nice if I could actually use it for something other than stabbing someone in self defense.

So, any thoughts? My only sharpening tool is the sharpmaker at this point though if you can point me towards an affordable alternative, that would be great.

Is this the knife? What kind of steel, 440, 420?
Try reading this and some other threads in this forum on sharpening
with the Sharpmaker..

A large diamond stone may be in order.

That's it. I don't know what kind of steel it is and it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere. The best that I could find was one site that simply said 400 series which isn't very specific.

I guess I was really just wondering if some knives are incompatible with the sharpmaker, at least if you are trying to use it as instructed. I mean, I've always been able to get a super sharp edge using the sharpmaker, but not with this knife. In fact, I somehow lost what little bit of sharpness was there to begin with by using the sharpmaker. I mean, the sharpmaker is pretty much idiot proof (I'm fairly sure I'm not an idiot) and so I'm curious as to why I'm not getting results with it.

Well, I guess I figured out my problem though not a solution. Thanks to the good old sharpie method I realized that the angles on the sharpmaker aren't broad enough for the rods to actually touch the edge on the gerber guardian.

I used a lansky sharpener for mine. I believe I set the bevel(listed on the clamp) at 20. I used the same method on both of my mark 1's. They are now scary sharp. Hope this helps. --wolf
