I just bought an 8" piece of damascus made with 1084 and 15N20. It is 1 1/8 inches wide by 1/4" thick. I would like to get two blades out of this piece. It is possible to make two narrow tang knives by welding on a piece of threaded rod onto the tangs and if possible do I weld on the rod before or after heat treat? I also need someone who can heat treat these two blades for me. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi, If it were me I would reforge it wider and thinner maybe even longer. I will do that if you like. There is plenty of steel there but too thick. I have a hydraulic press that would make short work out of it. Also have a brand new even-heat oven on the way for the heat-treating when you are ready. Bruce Bump

pawnbroker yes you should weld on the tang before you heat treat i can heat treat it for you if you need it as i make all my damascus from 1084&L6 i use an electric oven to do all my heat treating

Please don't use all thread. You will have stress risers in the threads, and your tang will fail. A better solution is a grade 5 bolt, cut the head of and weld the smooth rod onto the blade. Even better,IMHO is to cut a piece of flat steel to match the blade then forge the tang end round, and thread it, saves a lot of fitting problems in the guard area. Forging the tang from the blade is better yet.

Hey, this gives me an idea. Ok, it's probably a crazy idea, but it is an idea. Whats the chances of taking a piece of 1/4" thick annealed damascus, setting up a fence on the bandsaw, and slicing it in hanlf thickness wise?? Anyone ever tried that??

L6, Thats how we make mosaic damascus. But 1/4" doesnt give any margin for error. Mosaic is a loaf instead of a thin peice. I still want to forge it bigger and thinner. Bruce

I appreciate all the answers to my query. I will go with Bruce's advice and have it forged thinner and longer. I will really get two knives out of it that way. I have learned more on Bladeforums in the last few months than I could have learned in 5 years on my own. Thanks All.
