Can anyone help me try to identify this knife. It is the exact same size as a 110, including the blade length. The etching, that's right I said etching, on the blade says" MODEL 960 RUSTPROOF STEEL JAPAN" As you can see in one of the pictures, there is a 1/2 inch square indentation on one side. I don't think I made a bad find as the blade is very sharp and it looks to be well made.

I believe that to be "G96 Brand". I think its normall marked on that bit that has fallen off yours.

I agree...G96
Wow the handle looks Buck like doesnt it? I wonder if they used macassar ebony?

My very first folding lock back was from Japan, I think the company name was along the lines of Aer. I got it out of an Austad catalog, It had to be in the 77-80 range. I had nearly forgotten about it. I cant remember the last time I used it. I found it in a drawer out of the blue one day. I pulled it back out when I started accumulating Bucks a couple years ago. It cosmetically is still in decent shape but when I opened her up, she wouldnt stay locked like the lock notch is rounded out and worn out. I dont remember it not working before I lost track of it.........looks alot like a Buck but by no means is a Buck.
I'll have to pull it out of my gun case tonite and check it out and post a pic or 2.

Imported by Jet-Aer out of Patterson, NJ, from Japan, 1973 thru mid 1980s. G96 or G-96 seems to have been their name for all of their many different knives. Buck imitation specialist.

I found about 1 dozen of these knifes when I was clearing out a warehouse. they have very good steel blades. I belive they are about 30-40 years old. I have the box that the knifes came in but no brand name on them or the knifes just japan name on them.

Anybody know what steel those guys used on their knives ? DM

This quote from knifebloke, posted many years ago (from this old thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208565)

taken from the owner instructions that came with the knife! & i quote "knife makers choice knives are made of a special rust proof steel that combines the edge holding ability of high carbon steel with the easy care of stainless steel. when properly sharpend they will hold their razor sharp edge through long & repeated use" unquote well thats it for what its worth? cheers from the knifebloke

and here is some speculation about the blade steel in another BF thread:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=632656&highlight=jet+aer+g96+blade+steel

Also: G96 is still in business in Paterson NJ: http://www.g96.com/About_Us.html I sent email asking about the nature of the blade steel used in the Japanese mfg knives and will post any response. The current president was with the company then. It appears that today they produce chemical products, for gun maintenance and other uses.

You are welcome.

I cannot begin to tell you how much enjoyment, pleasure, excitement and, well, you already know, out of this forum that I am so deeply in debt to.
