Okay guys here's the deal. after baring my soul and exposing the specs of my awesome computer and os i started thinking i needed to update a little. so i fell into the following.
ibm, net vista,6758 tau. 20 gig hard drive, 128 meg of ram, 1000 megahertz processor.
okay so i sat down and did a clean format using win 98. everything went fine until the last time i had to restart. what happens is that when the computer starts up the monitor comes on for a little and then shuts off. it's not the monitor since it works with my other system. i'm sure i lost a video driver somewhere but i don't know where. like i said the reformat seemed to go well it's just after the final restart the monitor shuts down. i'm stumped. by the way the dreaded compaq is still perking along very niceley. any help would be appreciated. thanks ahgar

you may attempt to boot the pc holding down the F8 key, this will boot in safe mode, which does not load the drivers. you may be able to get in at that point, and install the correct driver.

another option would be to start over with the win 98 boot disk and reinstall the os.

hope this helps.

Microsoft has announced that it is no longer servicing Win 98 . It is obsolete after all !! They will introduce a new system around the first of the year.

thanks for the post. tried the reinstall and got the same result. when you hold down f8 it beeps, sometimes it goes into setup and sometimes not. thanks, ahgar

With Win98 if you hold down the control key while booting up you'll get the menu for different boot modes. Choose safe mode and it will load with the basic vga driver, 640x480 and 16 colors, which sux but there's nothing that can go wrong with that. Then you can go into the display setup and see what video card Windows thinks you have and go from there.

okay cougar allen that sounds like a plan. i'll give that a try thursday i appreciate the help. thanks again, ahgar

Don't hold down the F8 key, Windows doesn't like stuck keys! Just tap it about every 2 seconds once you see the monitor come to life. Then you should see the option for Safe Mode. If that doesn't work use 'Step by Step Notification'. Then you can see at what stage the OS is failing.

In many cases of install problems, the best way is to reformat and start again.

you're right about the computer not liking the stuck key thing. i almost solved the problem once and for all with a ball peen hammer{ford mechanics tool number 4} i'm working on a reformat this a.m.. later, ahgar
