I'm really looking for a new (or old in good shape) slip joint folder, preferably a stockman, or something w/2-3 blades.

Since I'm a newbie w/it comes to these knives. Can anyone help me on the best or good companies to buy from such as Case, Moor Maker, Queen, Schatt & Morgan, etc... or anyone I left off the list.

I can't really afford a custom right now and would like to keep the price in the $50ish range.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Well...

Carbon or stainless? If you say carbon, then it's Case's CV, Mooremaker (though they're more than $50) or Queen, with D2 or 1095. Stainless has Case's Tru-Sharp, Queen's Queen Steel or ATS-34, Schatt's 420HC, Buck's 420HC, or Camillus, again in 420HC.

What handle material? Bone, stag, wood, plastic?

Start with those, and we can best guide you. :)

I would say go to fleabay and look for an old USA schrade either OT or open stock if you want carbon or UH if you want stainless. Past that case's CV is good carbon, never owned a moormaker,S&M or queen. I don't care for stainless knife myself other than buck's 110,112 and my tempest. I can't get an edge on most stainless.

... I guess more details would've helped, so here's what I'm thinking so far.

I'd like Carbon blades and love the bone/stag/micarta type of handle material.

Of course the $50 was sortof a base, not an absolute. I've seen several custom slips for the $350 - $900 range that are beautiful, but I'm not there yet. I've got a couple Sebenza's that I paid that for and some custom fixed blades, but not quite there yet on a slip.

Just getting my feet wet. I'm sure I'll be there some day.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Bokers are very good for slightly less money than even Case. All the others mentioned are worthy, too. Other German brands like Eye Brand and Bulldog are worth a look-see. These German brands do seem to have more affordable stag handled knives.

I just picked up an Eye Brand stockman with stag and carbon blades for a little over $50 shipped. This will be my first experience with this line of slipjoints, but I've heard good things about them.

Of the new knives on the market, its going to be hard to go wrong with either Case CV or the Eye-brand. I have three different Eye-brand sodbusters and the medium stag stockman, and they are all very good cutters. I think my Eye-brand soddie may be a bit better than my Case sodie.
