Hi,

This is my first post!

Help me select a small/medium concealed carry fixed blade knife.
Something in the 3.5" - 4.0" blade length range.

Some initial possibilities:
Nealy Pesh-Kabz
Benchmade Nimravus or Cub
Boker Specialist (I know, a mass produced Nealy design)

Any feedback on quality of these knives? First hand experience?

Any pro/cons, and other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm open to input and other opinions, and would like to hear some thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Sig....

Welcome to BF.com

The Nim is a Great knife for self defense situations,,but makes a crappy camp use type of knife...

A knife you should really look at before they are gone is the Cuda Talon either in Talonite or 154 CM... (Talon 154 CM -$99.00USD @ 1SKS.com)

Depending on your needs this is one fine blade for $100 Clams...
Workmanship and Design are First rate...

Welcome to the forums. Look very hard at Bob Doziers medium size fixed blades. If you were to do a search here on the various sections of the forums about Doziers knives you would find it extremely hard to pass them over. Superb working blades at a great value.

Try the Newt Livesay knives. Click here for his site. If you want a tanto, get the Woo. For a drop point, get the NRGS. They are Black Ti'd and come with kydex in any configuration you want... he'll make it. His prices are very good.

Bob Dozier knives come to mind, the Arkansas Toothpick has a couple interesting concealed carry options.

It depends on where you want to carry your knife, I have a few neck knives and a couple that I wear IWB SOB...do you have a pref?

No Dumb questions here, everyone starts their learning process somewhere.

From the knives that you have mentioned it looks like you have already done some homework. Depending on your Budget I will second a knife from Dozier. The workmanship is excellent, his Kydex sheaths are among the best and Bob definately has taken the Heat Treatment of D2 to it's highest level. You can rest assured you'll be able to rely on a blade from Bob for any situation!

Though the Cuda Talon is also an excellent recommendation (154CM is a great steel) I would think for another $50-75 you could purchase a Custom knife from Bob. Occasionally you will find his knives for sale here in the "Individual - For Sale" Forum but it may or may not be the exact configuration that you'd like. Bob's current wait for a new Order is approx 3 months.

There are several other Custom Makers that produce a superb Tactical knife (Mike Snody, RJ Martin) but the price for these is often quite a bit more and the wait for a custom Order is much greater.

I have a Cub and two Specialists (one tanto and one spear) and I like them all. The Bokers have a great sheath system which should be a factor. Also check the Fallkniven F1, Cuda CQB II, Spyderco Moran, and especially Dozier Arkansas Toothpick. All of these are in my carry rotation, and have their own strengths. Can't think of a negative to any of them, except that the Fallkniven needs a custom sheath for concealed carry. My Cub came with a Kydex/Nylon sheath, but Beachmade sent me a great belt clip that let me modify it to IWB carry. My favorites? The Dozier and the Cuda, by a nose. Real serious blades, both. Let us know what you decide on! James:cool: :D :D

R.J. Martin Handiman is one heck of a useful sized knife. Great blade. Price is well under $150.

Thank you all for your input!

I'm going to take a really close look at the Dozier Arkansas Toothpick. It's the likely winner for this purchase. Workmanship looks great and will be a great addition to my new and slowly growing collection.

Welcome Sig, if you can find one take a look at the Cold Steel Master Hunter.

i would consider the following:

BM AFCK ($60 to 85 depending on the model)

CRKT kasper pro, small or large model ($50 or so range)also look at the zytel ones, they are good too

imho these designs are the best bang for $$ around , if ya dont like the BM's ya mentioned are good too

GERBER Yari.

Camillus CQB-1.

COLD STEEL Desperado.

Polkowski/Kasper Companion.

I have all four.

They are all excellent knives....especially for the $$$$.

Gerber Yari si another one to check out,a s mentioned earlier. Do a search in the review forum on the Nimravis or yari. A comparison review was done, which is excellent. I think you can get a Yari and a custom sheath from Normark for around your $$ limit.

The comparison review is here..

Unfortunately, it was placed off site, and seems to be unreachable now. Does anyone have a link to a working version? I looked around on that website, but couldn't find it. I wish Sergiusz had just placed it on bladeforums. Oh well. The Yari looks really nice.

Update: Found the comparison after some looking. It is now here.

I was gonna email you, but no email addy is listed. I am a newbie custom maker, if you are interested in getting a custom, email me. Thanks.

Gerber Yari. I had the nimravus but didn't like it.

The yari is thinner ground which makes for excellent slicing and cutting. I have fillet and cleaned several fish today with my yari. The sheath is concealex and is compatable with a tek-lock allowing for a wide range of carry methods. However, like most production knives the sheath is not perfectly mated to the blade. There are pressure points where it wears away the coating. No big deal really since it took me a few weeks of use to really notice the steel underneath but I believe Normark produces a better quality sheath than the standard one. You may find the handles a little blocky. This is both good and bad. The good side is that you can grind away some excess micarta until you find a grip more comfortable to you. The bad part is you half to grind it. The blade is 154CM and holds an edge pretty well.

If you have anymore questions ask around.

Another Camillus Talon fan checking in.
Mine is 154CM. Like Eric said, it's a bargain.

Welcome, SIG! If you have time to look around, you'll find lots of reasonably priced custom knives available. Excellent deals can be found from many of the makers that hang out here and are respected Bladeforums members. Check the Custom, ShopTalk, and the For Sale/ Makers Forums. Don't be afraid to ask questions, these folks live and breathe knives.:)
