So I want to start carrying my BK17 at work. It is already in the grey area of being slightly outside of what I am suppose to be carrying due to size limitations. However if I can get it to closely match w/ my uniform and not stick out like a sore thumb, I don't think it will be an issue.

I have read that you guys have died the scales and stock molle sheath and this is what I plan on trying. I would like to die the stock tan scales and tan sheath to olive drab green. Has anyone successfully done this and if so how? Thanks for any help. Carrying a BK17 on duty and a BK16 off duty would make me feel whole:)

Not quite what you were asking for, but here's my modded BK2:

how about getting a green OD kydex or spec ops sheath? as far as the scales it could be done but you can also get aftermarket scales. Some of the guys here do some awesome stuff, even if you want to paint the blade too. On the oher hand, would it be too "out of uniform if you switched to the black scales and find a black sheath? My uniform is navy blue and I've never had a problem with any of my rigs, but then again eveybody at work knows I'm a knut :D

Check with Kryptoglow. He does aftermarket scales that are great, and may be able to do od green if he doesn't already. I'd go aftermarket on the sheath. The dye jobs on the stock sheaths work, but the color seems to be different of the edges and main panels on the sheath.

If you can, please tell us what kind of uniform you wear. There's a pretty big difference between what you may want to do between Army issued ACU's/MultiCams and a police or EMT uniform.

Thx for the recommendations. Warrior that bk2 is like a 17 on steroids.

So far I am thinking od green kydex and spray painting the tan scales by following the directions on the link that warrior provided. Warrior what paint name brand and color did you use? The green color on your zebra scales would match perfect.

The kydex sheath would be settling because I actually like the stock sheath because of the molle attachments, double retention snaps and pouch that would be perfect for a multitool. You run out of real estate fast on the vest.

It's for a SWAT vest/ uniform. Black is a no go. It would be fine for other equipment but knives are a touchy subject (don't ask, it will only piss you off like it does me). It really needs to match and blend in so it doesn't give any excuse to get me called out. Yes, I know, gay.

Oh yah, as for the custom scales... I love my tommythewho and other custom scales for my personal beloved knives. But this is going to be a work, beater, user, that I have to be willing to lose. I don't want to get too invested in it. Thanks to all that contribute.

Look up RIT dye. It should achieve what you are after

rustoleum flat OD camo spray paint for the scales and maybe even for the sheath -- I've seen folks spray paint nylon gear before and it generally holds up pretty decent.

Krylon or Rustoleum works very well on nylon gear. I still have loads of gear that is still well painted from the Corps. If you want it to last, really saturate it and let it dry for the day out in the sun. It will be extremely rigid though, don't worry it happens to everybody.

For the scales, use the spare peanut butter handles. Soak for at least 20 minutes in Rit dye. Mix 2 parts Kelly green to 1 part dark brown. After they've soaked rinse the excess dye off with water and let dry.

I should add though that the handles for me never turned completely uniform in color. More of an OD tinted sunburst patter.

I'm intrigued by that first link on camo painting. Is the rustoleum textured really that good? I think I will give it a try.
