Could you guys help me out with a decision for a Xmas gift for my nephew? He is 13.., good kid.., and wanting a fairly nice folder. His only previous knife was a Buck 112, which he likes and takes good care of, but he is lusting over the BM 550 "Griptilian".

I'm a long time Balisong guy, so I don't keep up on all the latest folder stuff, and wondered if anyone could supply some input.

I did handle the knife briefly at a show, and I like the fact it's 440C simply because I think he can restore the edge more easily with what he has available. I also like the Axis Lock for all the obvious reasons..., but I have no base of knowledge about the strength or durability of the knife?

<AND>...I'm also not gonna pop for a BM 710 with M2  ...

Thanks in advance for anyone that may have comments...

The BM550 Griptilian will be a great intro to clips and blade holes (overall knife-one-handedness), and I think he'll find the 440 blade steel more than adequate for his purposes. Definitely go with the plain edge for him, since serrations might throw him a big curveball with resharpening.

Ahh, to be a kid again!

Professor.

The kid has good taste, the knife is well worth the money and would serve him well.

I have a 550. You will not make a mistake getting one.
It represents very good value for money.
It is a bulky knife.
The smaller 555, might be the way to go.
Let us know what you decide.

I do appreciate all the reponses. Very nice of you guys! I did consider the size of the knife when I looked at it, but he is pretty set on the 550...(yeah to be young and spoiled huh)! I do think the size of the piece is OK for him (he's 5'10...155lbs, so not a small 13 year-old).

Anyway thanks for all the help.., and the suggestion about "plain edge". I actually hadn't thought of that variable, because I just don't like serrations peronally. But I certainly don't want him bringing me the knife to sharpen  ! That's why the 440C sounded promising to me originally.
