OK, so here's the deal. I had 4 of the phenolic handled 639 so I had Sambar stag done to one and a replica of the Klinkhamer 2nd version (Sambar stag/ironwood/Sambar stag) done to the handles. I still have 2 of the phenolic handled 639 that are in mint condition in the Buck presentation box.
I just figured I would get them done to go with the rest of the Bucks I have a matched set of stag handled knives from 102 through 124 including a 121, 123, 125, 127, both versions of the 639s and a 106 axe. I did the other matched set in the Klinkhamer 2nd version (replicated). I suppose if the price ever dictated I could always have the handles redone in phenolic so they would look like they did originally.
I have also had several NIB Mint 639s with the Krayton handles and a complete set on NIB 600 series (602, 603, 605, 619, 620 and added a 639) I believe they were referred to as the WorkHorse Mate series, but I sold them just because they did not appeal to me. They only knives I enjoy and collect are the the 1972 and earlier years. I also have a set of three lines but they are going to my son for Xmas. I hope this is a decent explanation of why I changed the handle. I didn't want to sound like a smart azz and say "Because I could". Have a great one and keep on collecting.
