Hey all

I was given a kukhri by a Gurkha at my last deployed location. I guess it got me hooked on kukh's.

Obviously you folks are the "go-to" for quality kukh's.

What I'm looking for is something similiar to what I was given. I really like the length & balance. I want something similiar to take it to the field, and obviously I don't want to harm the gift I was given. This one will keep it's place as a momento.

Here's a pic, sorry for the poor quality:

So, what model (length & blade style) am I looking for?

Also, is there any problem with customization? I'm looking to possibly have G10 handles installed, a different finish professionally applied, and a kydex sheath made for attachment to my MOLLE based military pack.

Thanks!
Phil

Looks like you will want a 15" Chiruwa BAS, or a 16.5" Chiruwa AK. Chiruwa means slab handles. If you're going to do G-10 scales I'd guess thats what you want. E-mail Aunt Yangdu. She will guide you through your choices.

14" BDC (Baby Dui Chira) might fit the bill too- it's also got chiruwa handles, and it's a handsome khuk indeed. Smaller and a little more handy as far as packing it away, but it's quite a chopper.

No real substance to add;
I just wanted to say greetings. I noticed you're at Scott Air Force Base, and I'm not too far away. My wife drove right by base every day going to her old job, in fact.

Good luck on your quest. I'm sure these guys can help you out if anybody can.

That looks like one of the Gorkha Army khuks. Very much a BAS shape. Stick tang, though.

Either tang type is fine in an H.I. khukuri.

Welcome and have fun selecting and using your choice.

I think you want a good point on it- if you are going 'martial'. Any HI khuk can be customized. I would write Yangdu and ask her about a pointed WWll or BAS, or I would simply get a 15 Sirupate. There is such a Sirupate in today's Deals, but I think it might be a tad light, and too slender, for what you want. There are Sirupates heavier with broader blades.

You did not say how much your gift weighs.

I thought the suggestion of a 15" BDC a good one too.

Welcome,
munk

Welcome Phil. Email Yangdu about getting a chiruwa handled BAS. As for your customization requests, our very Daniel Koster has done such work on a number of HIs. You might want to shoot him an email about it.

BAS is probably closest, though a 16.6" WWII or Chiruwa AK. As Andy pointed out, the chiruwa style might serve better if you're gonna put G-10 scales on it. If you are looking for a particularly beefy, overbuilt blade, I'd recommend asking for something made by Sher.

Phil, you might want to weigh your khukuri so you can relate this info to Yangdu. I'd also request a traditional bolster and cho located near to the bolster as seen on your khukuri. That would assure that the balance you want is similar... :)

Howdy, Phil. Welcome.

The micarta thing can be done, but if you're just thinking about toughness or grip, it surely ain't necessary, and it'll add a lot of cost you don't have to pay. If you end up springing for a custom sheath, you'll be paying enough as it is.

Honestly, if this is a worker/dedicated field knife, I'd:

1. Buy a BAS.
2. Clean thoroughly.
3. Tape the edge and handle.
4. Spray paint the blade with flat enamel- either OD, coyote brown, or tan.
5. Take the tape off. Wrap the handle with grip tape.

Enjoy.

I had a 19" Chitlangi that I used in the field when I was AD infantry, at Fort Lewis. I'd be carrying a kuk modified just like I've described if I was still on a mortar team here in A-stan.

Luck,

John
